Post subject:  Christmas Tree operation modes?

Does anyone know (Slantzilla?) if there are any Dragrace Tree modes where the Green is displayed at a RANDOM interval from the last amber?

I did not want to yet venture on yellow bullet forms for this one.

All of the tree modes that I am aware of:
  • Sportsman 5/10
    Pro 5/10
    Sportsman 4/10
    Pro 4/10
    instant green (does not apply)
have a fixed delay between the last amber and the green - no randomization.

Thanks!

Greg

Not relevant today, but there was one track I ran, years ago, where the "starter" had a box with three buttons. red, yellow green. Strickly manual control. You could not anticipate the tree.

Unless you had some kind of tree you were forced to leave on green, it would be pointless.

No Prep Kings had some kind of silly thing where you couldn't leave until the green was full on.

Bracket racing if you leave on the green bulb you dead man.

Random delay between the third amber and green would make it impossible to hit the tree at all.

Yes, I know that, Just wondering if anyone besides Charrile in modern times has seen a random time delay between the bottom amber and the green?

Charlie, thanks for sharing. I would have never known that about the manual switches for the starter,. I alsoi like watching the old videos where there are 5 ambers.. the tree takes forever. Shows the historical and important development of the sport.

You would not believe what I have seen at different tracks over the years. How about an asphalt starting "pad" then onto the dirt straightaway of a circle track? Or 500 ft drags with no clocks, just someone at the finish line that held up either one flag or two flags to designate which lane won?

I have raced at over 50 different drag strips in 15 states over 65 years.

When I started going to the track in 1974, it was a 5 amber tree, no 60 foot clocks, no reaction timers, and no splits. Your time slip had ET, MPH, and Win or Lose.

I think Indy got the 3 light tree, reaction timers, and 60 foot clocks around 1983. We got them at Mason County in 1986.

That is a good historical perspective.

When I started, Way back when, we used a "hour glass". :) :)
Actually back in the "50's, No tree, flagman. timers were mechanical dials with rotating hands, and if I remember correctly to the hundredth of a sec.

I have seen Videos of that era on Brian Lohnes' channel and other vintage NHRA stuff.

George Ray's still runs only Index classes because their clocks cannot set a dial in.

I raced with a flagger one time, but it was after Larry Sheay ran over the tree with his 65 Dodge Hemi car when he broke an axle mid wheelie.

Handicaps were done by setting the slow car out by car lengths too, right? :D

Actually, yes. They did it that way at Jacksons (later Kings) Dragway (near Savannah NY) back around 1964. Track had two asphalt Lanes separated with a grass median. This was also the track that used the manual red, yellow, green traffic light for a tree.
