Post subject:  1-2 shift issue
Driving my race car into the garage about 40'. Had it in low, and when I ratcheted into second it was almost like someone hit the brakes for a second. I took it out on the road and tried it a time or two and it did the same. Is this a adjustment issue or is something deeper going on? Tranny experts speak up! :D :D

PS. I have driven it to and from work(8 miles round trip) a couple times this past month and it was fine. First time it happened was today and I only moved it out of my garage and back in.

I think with a full manual VB and the accumulator blocked up the shifts can be harsh if you were running the car slow speeds, the ambient temp is cold, and the car is not warmed up fully.


I would not worry about it because when you are going 60 MPH+ on the dragstrip and things are warm you won't notice.

I have had that happen to me and compared to a stock transmission things seem violent and wrong.... but are likely working correctly.

There's a difference between a harsh shift and one that feels like you hit the brakes. The former is going to be normal with a race-prepped transmission. The latter, no, that sounds like you're getting binding of some kind in the 1-2 handoff. I don't think I'd ignore it; I think I'd look into it—either to satisfy myself that no, it's not what I thought I felt, or to stop it growing into an expensive repair.

That is what I thought too Dan. I may let the car warm up good and try it again and see if it improves or goes away.

Couple of questions. Is it a full manual valve body? Does it have the low band apply feature? do you have a trans brake?

No, I just have a stock valve body with a stage 3 Transgo shift kit, Full manual shifts. No trans brake.

I'm not familiar with the operation of the transgo kit. But it sounds like it might use the 1st/reverse band for 1st gear, and have excessive overlap with the 1st/reverse band releasing and the 2nd gear band applying. I would double check the band adjustments, and if they are ok, give transgo a call.

I think Charlie's advice is bang on target.

At the risk of veering into religious-beliefs territory…what trans fluid are you running? If it's Type F, you might want to give that a re-think and switch to Dexron-VI, which is vastly superior in every possible respect, and its characteristics (specifically, its viscosity characteristics) will likely do a bit more for your car's performance than anything about Type-F. There's more detail—a lot more—but I'm not tryna be the guy on the corner with the bullhorn and the placard about it.

That could be a TransGo thing with that 1-2 overlap. I cannot remember if my A&A trans VB does that now. Likely not.

I ran my TransGo TF3 Vb for 10+ years in Ruster with it like that and no issues.

For sure call them and see what they say, as it cannot make anything worse.

I don't think so. I have been running this same transmission for over 5 years and have made no changes to it. It never did this before.

You might also check the shifter cable adjustment? Not likely, but worth trying in case it is ending up between gears. I agree it could be overlap that could be harmful to the trans. This happened to me once or twice after running a 30 min full bore roadcourse session at Willow Springs in the 64 Dart (late 90s). I think just ignored it and it never happened again, but it is possibly I adjusted the shifter cable a little. The trans was quite hot from the track beating. It had a homebuilt shift kit in a PB 904.
