I made a rookie mistake and over-torqued my head bolts to 80 ft-lbs. I was reading through Dutra's book and on page 107 it says 80 ft-lbs. (Other spec sheets say 65). Do I have anything to worry about? The engine is NOT installed yet so should I just start over again with a new gasket and re-torque just to be safe? I'm using the Fel-Pro 9076 composite gasket. Thanks for your help.

Looks like a Jeep gasket. What are you working on?

I have always torqued mine to 80 or even higher, since I started with these things in 1989. I bet I have installed 50-100 Slant 6 heads so far. Never had a problem. Unless you somehow broke or stripped a head bolt, you will be fine. You would know it if you had.

Sorry. The head gasket is a Fel-Pro 7918. I was afraid by torqueing to 80 ft lbs I might have crushed the gasket too much. Thanks for the help.

I'm glad, 'cause that ain't enough torque for a 4.0!
