first of all, it seems no matter what timing i set my 1978 slant 6 to, the thing wont shut off at times. i run it from 8-11 degrees, and put an offenhauser intake with a holley carb and that calls for advancing the timing 4 degrees, but nothing works consistently-any suggestions?

also, the clutch makes the vehicle vibrate violently at take off. it works fine in the other gears. ive tried taking off slowly or accelerating rapidly but nothing works. ive put in a new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and have constantly adjusted it but i still get that shake when taking off from a stand still-any help would be appreciated.

What is the idle speed when you shut-off the engine? Try to get that as low as possible.

Was the flywheel resurfaced when the clutch was replaced?
The main cause(s) for clutch "chatter" are"
- uneven flywheel surface. (check with a dial indicator)
- worn pilot bushing
- bent hub in the clutch disc (be careful installing the tranny)
- oil or grease on the friction surface
- improperly adjusted pressure plate (factory set)

i think the oil on the clutch may be the problem-will this only effect it at takeoff? thats the only vibration i get, 2/3 gear is smooth.

about the timing, i have it idling as low as it will go, but i have a loss of power and need to re-time it. im getting tired of timing it and want to know anyone's opinion on msd-8782. it is supposed to adjust my timing 15 degrees from a dial in the cab. i found it from summitt and wonder how well it works. also, in timing an engine, should the engine be warm or cold?

last thing, i was told the slant six should be timed at 8-11 degrees, with my truck at 11 degrees. the offenhauser intake and holley carb call for the timing to be advanced 4 degrees, does this mean it should be on 15 degrees or 7 degrees?

You can also get a shudder from bad U-joints, loose transmission bolts, loose transmission mounts, and a loose transmission cross member.
