Can valve guides be replaced? I have read somewhere that they are integral to the head in slant six. But at least the Rock Auto is selling valve guides that are supposed to be for the slant six. |

Valve guides are integral to the head. However, the can be repaired and/or replaced. From cheapest to best. 1)Knerling 2)"Winona" bronzewall (like a helicoil) 3)Bore out old guide and replace with either a cast iron or bronze liner. First two methods can be done in a home shop with the proper tools. Last method is a machine shop operation. After any of these methods, regrinding the seats is required. |

(Sorry I seem to have put the question in the wrong category and I don't know how to move it) Thanks. I believe I'll let the machine shop do it. The exhaust guides are very sloppy and some have even small cracks at the top. The valve seats are badly recessed and need to be replaced anyway. Just to make sure, when you say "Bore out old guide and replace with either a cast iron or bronze liner", do you mean replacing with a replacement valve guide (are there such things for a /6?) or are what you refer to something different? |

I moved the post.Just to make sure, when you say "Bore out old guide and replace with either a cast iron or bronze liner", do you mean replacing with a replacement valve guide (are there such things for a /6?) or are what you refer to something different? Yes, I mean using a replacement guide. Basically the replacement guides are made with a certain OD and ID. The machine shop will bore out the old guide, then press the new guide (sleeve) into the over size hole. Then they will resize the ID to get the proper stem to guide clearance, and cut the guide to the proper length. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPhsJu6oXfU |
