Oh, geeze, yeah, that KIPA carburetor-shaped gumball machine trinket is not even close to fitting/working/hooking up on a Slant-6. Here is hoping the mystery Holley item you're fetching is at least minimally suitable; odds aren't all that good.

So I drove home my new pride and joy. a 1973 Dodge D200. It was converted from BB400/auto to a slant 6 3 on the tree.. no idea why, but the /6 is what interested me most. HOWEVER There are issues. I didn't really inspect the truck too much when I bought it as I had a ferry to catch. It had new alt, tune up parts, carb, waterpump, fuel pump, and it fired right up. I soon discovered very low power and buckets of smoke. I expected a little as the venf=dor said it needed valve seals. So I have now had time to look it over. I adjusted the timing, as it was really far advanced (over 10, I set back to 4-5ish) Then I checked the oil. The oil was 3 inches past full on the dipstick. and smelled like gas. Sure enough, I drained it... Incidentally, the oil drain plus was a 12mm bolt and washer gooped up with silicone... and I must have got 12-15 quarts of gas and oil out of the crank case. It came with a new fuel pump, and shiny new Chinese "Carter" carb. ANy tips on where to look first before I end up filling the sump with fresh oil? I have seen gas in oil before, but never this much. |

Fuel pump diaphragm ruptures -->shoots gasoline into the crankcase with every pump stroke. New pumps are problematic (faulty, quick-fail Chinese garbage); as with many parts for older vehicles, getting a good pump involves a fishing trip; the older-type AC pumps are a solid pick. Like this, this, or this. Bit of an age-related gamble, but still a better bet than the insta-fail new-new junk. There are no direct-replacement Chinese carburetors for Slant-6 applications, so guessing the pretend-Carter you have is one of the V8 2bbl items. What carburetor is on the engine now? Thank you! I'm good with most engine stuff, but my training has been largely involving fuel injection, and the occasional SU carb. I suspected a Fuel Pump issue, but I've not seen this smount of fuel bypass into the sump. At least I know the engine is clean inside lol.. hopefully the oil sliptivity wasn't too compromised. I haven't looked too close at the carb, but the seller has sent me a replacement, which is either a 1920 or 1945.. I haven't seen it yet. Wondering if an electric pump is a better choice at this point. |

You could do that, and by your own description, you have more experience with electric pumps than mechanical pumps.You might not need the mention, but you will need to crank the output pressure down to about 4-6 psi to accommodate the carb's requirements. Roger |

Yup, I figured on that. I've converted a few British cars to Electric pump (SU Carbs) but I'll mull over the choices. I like the idea of stock mechanical pump, I guess I'm worried about a repeat failure. Noone seems to have rebuild kits, which I'd prefer. We'll see. Thanks for the thoughts mate. |

No. Electric pumps and carburetors are a poor marriage. If you do decide to go this direction, anything short of a complete job is dangerous and problem-prone. See here. Put on a good and intact instance of the intended mechanical fuel pump. Do the Fuel line mod. Change the oil, and it will also be a good idea to service the oil pressure relief valve to make sure it's doing its job, as described in these two threads: thread 1, thread 2. Then assess what your additional needs and wants might be. |

Thanks for all the replies. I googled the carb sitting on the engine. It's this puppy off Amazon... https://www.amazon.com/KIPA-Carburetor- ... B076BWL7T9 Apparently intended for F*rd in-lines. I'm picking up a carb today that the seller sent me. Either a 1945 or 1920.. Hope this will help. Probably going with a new mech fuel pump. That will wait for payday lol! |

I dont know that it was "converted" I know where there's a 74 club cab (don't remember if a D100 or 200) in a junkyard that was an original /6 truck, mostly complete but missing its /6.... sticker under hood verifies a /6 truck |
