Got this note from Ken at Oregon: The #819 grind is a very popular mechanical performance grind for the Slant six. #819 219/219 @ .050”, 264/264 adv, ..437”/.437” lift, 110 lobe sep #1947 224/224 @ .050”, 270/270 adv, .470”/.470” lift, 110 sep If you want something bigger take a look at the #1947. thoughts? It's for my son's '65 Barracuda, 904, 8.75" rear. Mostly a cruiser but I'd like to get him to bring it to some events. |

You're already connected with Oregon, so that's half the battle. Dutra RV-10RDP (Oregon grind № 2106R) is a terrific choice. It's the MP 244 cam, optimized and updated by Doug Dutra. I'd recommend it over the 819. |

The 819 works very well. I ran it in my truck for several year. Whichever cam you go with I'd be sure to plane the head or block to bump the compression up a little. It will do nothing but help all the way around. |

We need to know the static compression ratio and torque converter stall you plan to use. Those will affect cam choice a ton. Lou |

It's .030 over with flattop Silv-O-Lite pistons. and I had .100 taken off the block. I need to do some measuring and CC the head. A stock converter for now and 2.93 open diff 7.25" We have an 8.75 rear but no center for it yet. Thinking 3.23 like my sedan maybe 3.55 I shipped the cam and lifters off to Oregon but I didn't specify the grind. It should take a week for it to get there. I'm hoping to make a decision by then. |

If it were me, I'd get Edge racing converters to build me a 2500-2700 stall unit for street use and run 3.23 gears. It'll be way peppier than stock wit the higher stall and will cost almost nothing on the MPG or driveability. You'll have around 9:1 comp, so I'd get the 1947 cam. If it were me, I'd do a reverse dual pattern, which has worked great for me and many many of the knowledgable racers. My cam design for your application would be this: Lobe 1947 on intake and lobe 819 on exhaust. Specify lobe separation angle (LSA) of 106 deg. If they can adjust the centerline during grinding, ask them to put that at 102 deg for that cam. You should check it, and may have to adjust it yourself when you degree the cam. Set it to 100-102 installed intake centerline. Initial lash settings would be 0.022" intake and 0.022" exhaust, and try adjusting from there, opening it up by 0.002" increments if idle gets worse when hot. The last specified from whatever cam company is never quite right, in all my experiences (more than a dozen cams from 4 different companies). Lou |

I should really make a cam post where I put up all my good cams for different applications. I assume folks would be interested in that? I have gotten cam profiles from many of the fast racers, and have tried 15-20 myself over the years. Mostly NA, but turbo and supercharger too. Lou |

Well Lou, You've probably built more slants than anyone at this point. That would be great. I'm thinking about making videos of my whole build (right and wrong). Video is kind of my area. It could make for some lively discussions. I thinking about a video series dealing with each step in the process. Not trying to be the expert but an seasoned amateur. It would be fun to include "Cellphone" footage of different points of view. I realize I"m setting myself up for a giant project but if I take it one step at a time. one topic at a time. I can set up a dropbox/Google Drive for folks to upland video comments. I"m trying to retire. They keep sending me work. Maybe this is the year I slow down. (A little) |
