Post subject:  64 Valiant Rear Tranny Seal

Looking under my car the other day, I found a puddle on the ground - the rear tranny seal is leaking. The car has been sitting over the winter months. It is a 1964 Canadian Valiant with a /6 and a push button cable 904 tranny. My 1964 parts book shows the mopar number as 2205080 for this seal.

It also shows 2464482 for VX2, V2 , L2 which I think are for 8 cyl cars?

This older thread below from the forum discusses a different part number for this application: part № 1942 401

Which is correct?

Many Thxs

I no longer have a '64 Canadian FPC. If your FPC lists VX cars, that's a Canadian book (paper? Or PDF?)

The US '64 FPC shows 1942 401 for the 6-cylinder cars, 2205 080 for the 8-cylinder cars; everything from Dart-Valiant 'with heavy duty transmission' up through Imperial. This makes me suspect the 2205 080 is for A727 transmissions, and we already know the 1942 401 is for pre-'65 A904 transmissions. Listing the '080 for 8-cylinder Dart/Valiant cars might be an error in the '64 US book; those cars got A904s, not A727s.

Canadian '60-'63 Valiant-Lancer-Dart FPC shows 1942 401, only.

Highest likelihood is that you need the 1942 401.

2464 482 appears only once in the US '64 FPC, as a component included in auto trans gasket/seal kit 2495 091, which is listed as the kit for 8-cylinder Valiant-Dart cars. It is not listed separately as the rear seal for the automatic transmission in those cars; again, that's where 2205 080 is listed. The 2464 482 seal is even larger in diameter than the 2205 080, so…yeah!

The only automatic transmission difference between US and Canadian '64 A-bodies was the Canadian Slant-6 cars used a different ring gear (same as US '60-'61) to comport with the Prestolite direct-drive starter vs. the US gear-reduction item.

1942 401 specs are here.

2205 080 specs are here.

Should be easily obvious from the specs (shaft diameter, outer diameter, etc) which one your car needs.

Many thxs. This is very helpful info!

(I have the actual paper parts manual from '64 - has US and Canadian cars in it)

I had the paper one, too, which is why I no longer have it, nor most of my other Canadian FPCs. I didn't yet have a sheetfeed scanner. Now I do, and it's an amazing thing – take a parts manual (or similar) to a printshop and have the spine/binding sliced off, then the scanner will turn it into a good PDF with like 10 minutes' work.
