Greetings,

Several years ago I installed a Super-six manifold and BBD on my 1983 B150. It runs find, but idles poorly. I've tried to adjust the idle mixture screws, but it doesn't help much. I'd imagine the carb is just getting tired--actually, it was probably already tired when installed--i.e., throttle shafts are leaky, progression passages clogged, etc... I've never had great luck rebuilding high mileage carbs, although I've done plenty, and I don't have time/interest in trying with this one. I'd prefer to stick with the BBD, but I can't find any reman carbs for the Slant. However there are plenty of "cheap remans" available for the 318 for under $100.

I'm looking for wisdom regarding the use of a reman 318 carb, and any necessary or suggested modifications. The van is my work vehicle, and I love it, but it's not worth putting a new carb on it for $400-500, if I could even find one. Rather looking for the easy, inexpensive fix, that cleans-up the idle.

Thanks for any input.

Not worth it?
If it's your daily driver/ work vehicle if that's what it takes then yeah it's definitely worth it. There's been some nos 318 BBDs on eBay lately for around $4 bills.

That's a pretty big chunk of change when I can buy a new Chinese carb on Amazon for $76 with lots of high ratings from purchasers. O-rings are probably ethanol resistant Viton, and it's a pretty darn low tech part to manufacture.

Sure, it might not be NOS Chrysler, but I'm thinking a NOS carb with unknown storage conditions and 50 year old Buna rubber o-rings and pump diaphragm, unless it's leather, might not be the best choice even for the same money.

As far as the "chinese" carbs are concerned I too have been tempted to give them a try. Many have had good results, many have had very bad results. The bad results could be as simple as non adjustable carbs, carbs that have metal that corrodes badly when exposed to ethanol, or worst case a carb that suddenly decides that holding fuel inside isn't as fun as leaky it. If a carb on a slant develops a big leaks if dumps it directly on a very hot exhaust manifold=fire.

and please try to keep politics out of this forum. there are places for it and this isn't one of them.

Re: politics, will do. Delete made.

This is the one I purchased:

Reviews on Amazon all look pretty positive and many are comprehensive, i.e., pictures and details vs. scripted.

We'll see if the linkage is anywhere close to working with the throttle and kick-down linkages. Worst case, I suppose I can pull the throttle arm off the old carb and braze it to the new one.

I finally replaced the carb on my '78 Datsun B210GX with a Chinese carb several years ago, after doing an on the car bowl and idle passage cleanout on the original every couple years. Dribbled some gas into the throat of the new carb and hit the key. Car idled better than it every has in the 25 years I've owned it with no adjustment. Kicked myself for not replacing it sooner.

You may get a good one. Since the reman market is so poor these days and all the possible cores are 40+ years old it gets worse. The only reason I decided against the china 2bbl route is I found a never rebuilt motorcraft 2bbl in my inlaws stash of old parts. Let us know how it turns out and give random updates.

For the last decade I have had some yard buggies in my family. They all have chinese clones of the honda gy6 150cc engine. They all run cheap made in china carbs that cost about 40 on amazon. Every few years they plug up and stop running correctly. A new cheap carb solves the problem.
