I want to rebuild my 300,000 mile slant this winter and want a little more pep. I am thinking of building it for a project car and the look is important. I am thinking of the following items
Offy dual carb intake drilled out and a couple of BBS carbs.
mild cam,
Offy valve cover,
windage tray,
double roller timing chain,
custom made header.
I was told this is not a bad way to go. I know most of you do not like the dual carb route but like I said. It has to do with the look I am trying to acheive.
What do I have to do to the head and about how much money would i be looking at or does someone have a worked over head they might be selling this winter already done. miehle@msn.com
My son and I are building the motor and already have our eye on a kit with new pistons, rods, pushrods, lifters, oil pump, bearings etc. and I figure a good hone and a dip in the old hot tank and we will be on our way. Can anyone give me an idea on a horsepower rating, what type of cam to use, and any other important info I may be needing. Thanks for the help,
Chas.

This sounds like a pretty good combo and a great project.
Look around to see if you can find a second engine to do the rebuild on, that way you can take your time and not have the car in pieces. Once you have the replacement engine assembled and ready, just swap it into the car.

As for the actual build-up, read-up on the different combos in the articles section of this site and be sure to do some porting work on the head, that is where a lot of power is found.

I am doing a simular project on my '64 Dart. I am pulling the stock 170/6 and replacing it with a 49K 225 from a '63 truck. The motor has been checked out, honed .002 to clean it up. The head is basically stock (I'm not brave enough to try my hand at porting). The cam that I will probably use is from COMP Cams #252S. This is very close to the last cam change on the /6. COMP thinks I should change the valve springs due to the somewhat higher lift. I don't know if they are trying to sell parts or are being genuine. I'm still researching. The kit from COMP that includes the springs and retainers goes for $301 + shipping (roughly $20.).
In talking to the folks at Carter they said that the BBS carb, although built by Carter was built to Chrysler specs. In their opinion it is not the best carb to run for dual carbs. The biggest problem concerning this carb, according to them, is the enrichment circuit which is vacuum controlled. When running dual carbs the motor is over-richened (if that a word). The cure for this is two tweak the spring under the metering rod. It need to be shortened basically 10%.
I did this and it worked better. I hope that by increasing cubes and cam duration that I can make it work decent.
The instructions for the manifold say that the carbs need to be jetted down 2 sizes. The Carter people claim that the part numbers for the jets for the BBS have no rhyme or reason. I gave them the part numbers for the stock jets but they claimed that they cannot get the smaller jets without the exact part number.
If you have better luck than I please Post back with you results.
Good Luck
R. Gabel

RG- i'd stay with the stock valve spring, i use stock on my car and more lift than the 252, checked for coil bind, none found, it revs nicely. Also, don't be scared to head port. Worst thing that can happen is you'll nick a valve seat, but you should get the seats cut AFTER you port (i usually do a clean up polish after the seats are cut...very carefully!)

Guest Chas- you may need to bore it, make sure ya check the holes for out of roundness. I'd look at the Isky 264 cam, i was going to use this before I chose a bigger one, i heard from very good sources that it's a fun cam for a mild motor. Port up the head a little, get it to flow some more, you can choose larger valves (do a search on this board)... good luck and have fun :)

OK guys let me give you the skinny! The slant is coming out of my 75 Dart Sport. It has close to 300K on it and the motor not surprisingly is in great shape. Dont frown but I have not changed the oil in almost 50K miles. I am two weeks from taking the motor out of the car and this motor will be rebuilt by my son and I. It will be a mild build like I stated before and I am sticking on the lines I started with. This will be my first slant build and after 25 plus years of running them and taking my interests in a membership with the original SSCOA I have always had a fancy for this unbreakable motor. I know there are some guys on this site with tons of knowledge and advice and hopefully some parts for sale in the near future to help me out with my dream. I am going to the other side and building my 75 as a Rallye Clone with a built small block yada yada yada! The slant however is going to breath life again and in a special way.
I am in the market and if anyone can help me at finding a source for the kit car I need I want to build a T Bucket and title it as a Dodge Brothers model and run Slant power. The Offy Dual Carbs and the Offy Valve Cover are a must. Some chrome and lots of detail on this motor will be in order. I have drawn a picture of what I feel it must look like and I want to add some mopar stuff to it for color. Dart Tail lights, A body 'Tuff Wheel" front fenders from a Prowler, A body Rallye Wheels AKA narrowed and widened Stocktons just to name a few items. It has always been a want of mine to have a T bucket and what better way to go than complete Mopar driveline for power. I am forever hooked on the leaning tower of power and this car I want to build will be my last. I am getting too old to keep building them. After this one the rest will be bought. What a way to go out! I have looked everywhere and cannot find T bucket kits. There used to be a kit car book but I have not seen one anywhere. I got time and will find something and the games will begin.
