What do you have coming off the head? Stock manifold, Dutra duals, headers? Splitting the exhaust downstream of a stock manifold won't give you much more than a single, larger pipe. As far as straight pipe, I wouldn't worry as much about emissions laws as I would about noise abatement ordinances and my own hearing. |

yea its a stock super six manifold,so it will be too loud?? i just want a good ,or shall i say better sound than the weak sound im getting from my slant so you reccomend a single exaust with a muffler?? i dont know this is my first car that i am able to drive(my other a 73 challenger with a 360 and i was 10) and i want to get it right the first time! thanks P.S: there are no noise ordinance laws that go into affect before mid-night here |

Go for quality of sound, not volume. I'd recommend a single pipe, say 2-1/4", and a turbo muffler. Do a search and you'll find lots of discussion on the specifics - pipe diameters, brands, models. The stock exhaust manifold has one outlet, which is a bottleneck in the system. Putting a "Y" in the downpipe and having a dual exhaust the rest of the way back won't remove that bottleneck, so any power gain from dual pipes over a good single pipe is limited. If you're sticking with the stock manifold, go with a single larger diameter pipe. You might be able to open up the manifold outlet a bit to match it with the downpipe diameter - it's worth checking. As far as mufflers, I would definitely keep one on each pipe. At least a glasspack, a turbo-type muffler, Flowmaster, anything, please! Straight pipes are annoying on the street and torture on the highway. And wouldn't it be nice to be able to drive anywhere, any time without hassle? Gee, I sound like my dad! By the way, an open element air cleaner would let you hear a different aspect of the engine, and it sounds good ...There is also something to be said for stealth. |

Get a Borla muffler. You can't beat a 1,000,000 mile warrenty, and they *supposedly* flow better than a straight pipe! I haven't heard one on a slant (yet), but it doesn't sound bad on my buddy's truck... I think they're like $100 at summit -www.summitracing.com- -zorg |

I run a straight pipe on my stock 170. It's really loud when you stomp on it.. I love it. The pipe starts out at 1 3/4" and steps down to 1 1/2" just behind the front seats then dumps behind the drivers side wheels. I had it sticking out the back but the exhaust would suck back into the car... The step down gives that kick ass crackel and pop sound when you shift from into second when you are really on it or when you hit the gas hard then coast... I'll be installing a bellflower tip soon. get one @ http://www.speedwaymotors.com/default.asp If you are looking for a cool muffler for a split exhaust - and still want it loud; I have a bunch of chrome Harley exhaust tips that I don't need that I'll let go for cheap... they have a baffle th quite the noise (slightly) http://www.readersrides.com/joepix/harleypipe01.jpg I have 3 sets - 2 are baloney tips and the 3ed is a set of stock fat boy pipes with real muffler packing, not just a baffle. http://www.readersrides.com/joepix/harleypipe02.jpg Joe |
