as a slantsixer since 61 i have atough question for our sages. when is it time to call it quits and have your rusted body and frame slantsix car squashed bythe wrecking yard. i have driven a 77 sl6 4spd o.d. wagon since new . it is the best car i have had. it has 360 k on it with a rebuilt s6 at 260k. runs well. although i have had the floor and frame welded up in places by rust doctors, it now has substantially rusted through the spare tire wheel well under the rear deck , a rear leaf spring bracket has rusted through the unibody box frame andthe left front floor has rusted through just under the brake and clutch pedals. there arent too many welders available these days. the ones i talked to dont want todo it , say it is too tough a job or want tosoak me on the cost. what do you sages think. i really would prefer to keep using the car. do you reach a point with these bodies where they cant be fixed anymore. i need smart advice onthis. does our doctor have any experience with this odd problem? thanks tons callpaladin@aol.com |

Seeing that it never rains in California..... I don't have much experience with major rust repairs. (I have welded-in new sheetmetal but not structural stuff) Hate to say that my vote is to find a rust free replacement car and part-out the rusty one. In the end you will have a better car for less money. DD |

Sounds like you two of you have had allot of good years together. But you know the nice thing about cars is no one will think bad of you for dumping the old gal for something sweeter. Just an option though, she may have overriding good caractor |

I have to agree with Doug. You'll end up putting more in than what the car is worth. There are still good ones out there. Heck, I only paid 500 for my heap. Had to put a $125 junk yard trans and a $20 master cylinder when I got it. I later got a free engine (traded for parts off my late Fury) when the original started blowing oil out of every place open. Of course, my car is also relitivly rust free...... |
