My 73 Duster has no reverse (/6 and automatic). It also has no kickdown rod. I don't think the lack of a rod affects reverse.....or does it? Thanks.

A kickdown rod is necessary to the proper functioning of the transmission. If you have been running the car for awhile without the kickdown arm you might have burned up the transmission. I would install a kickdown A.S.A.P. and see if it helps your situation any.

Post subject:  Don't Know

Actually, I have never run it other than to park it in the garage after it was dropped off here. I was told by the guy I bought it from that there was no reverse. I did try to put it in reverse and was unable to back up. I am working on getting the rod on. I was just curious if it would affect reverse or not. Logically, I think not but I figured someone could tell me for sure. Thanks.

My 63 until about 6 months was not equipped with a kickdown, Instead a plate was bolted onto the case to cover the opening. This is the original transmission, so some modifications for line pressure must have been made as this transmission still performs like the day it left the assembly line. Tough these 904s

Hey, someone else in Lubbock has a Slant!
First thing I'd check is the adjustment on the shifter mechanism. Make sure that R on the shifter is R at the trans, etc. I had a little problem with my pushbutton/cable shift 904 until Doc showed me how to set it right.
I hope to see you around town sometime.

Thanks everyone. I will check it all out. I hate to pay for a rebuild if all I need is something minor. I'll see ya around Lubbock if I ever get it running. I do drive my 50 Chevy pickup around a lot. Sometimes on the weekly Sonic cruise night.

If reverse is engaged, while the engine is idling too high, the reverse band anchor ends can be snapped off.
