Post subject:  Axel swap to large bolt pattern

Are there large bolt pattern axels that I can swap into my stock 7.25 rear end? and what vehicles do they come out of. Thanks.

Post subject:  Just easier to swap rear axles...

We recently went over this subject and the 1973-1976 LBP axles shafts are shorter than the pre-1973 units, for the price you'll pay at the junkyard it'd be cheaper to find a good 1973-1976 A-body(if that's what you have) and buy the whole unit and slide it under there and install it.

Thanks DI; Yes it's a 72 Swinger. What does LBP stand for?

Large Bolt Pattern (4.5" Bolt circle) as opposed to Small Bolt pattern (4" bolt circle)

The LBP axles have a different bearing on them and won't fit an SBP housing anyway.

How hard is it to install large bolt pattern axles on a car. I have a 73 Dart and could shoot the guy that thought a small bolt pattern would be a good idea. Do the large bolt pattern axles take 13 inch tires too? Is there an axle that will fit that can take larger tires? Eventually I would like to get nice wheels and in the 13 in realm your choices seem to be limited to tires that would only look good on a car with disc brakes, I don't really want to show off my rusty drum brakes.

your car should have 14inch wheels on it unless it has the 9 inch drums and someone decieded to put smaller rims on it. also, some 73 base model cars came with the small bolt pattern from the factory.

No, I'm fairly sure my car has 13 inch tires, and considering the care my car's had I doubt if they did a swap(who would switch to smaller tires?) I guess it's possible, but they'd have to change the hubcap size too and my hubcaps look very factory. Then again, maybe I'm thinking wrong, but I could also send the wheel size I'm using(as to give an idea of my tire size).

Better check the sex of your Dart - Shiva the Destroyer was a male God of the underworld.

The swapping of the rear axle is only half of the equation. Don't forget the other two wheels up front. You probably want them to be the same bolt pattern, so you don't have to carry two spare tires.
