| Post subject: | Fouling air cleaner element, why?? |
OK, got a question for y'all. Just replaced the air cleaner element in my "75 Dart /6. Why would it be fouling, or getting dirty so quick after only a few hundred miles?? Anyone else ever had this problem, and what would be a fix?? The hoses are hooked up to a new pcv valve and a breather element both coming out of the valve cover. Dennis |

Use an after market breather without the nipple for the hose that goes to the air cleaner. My engine has hardly any blow by, but when I had the breather hooked to the air cleaner, it got dirty fast. So in the cooler months when I run the stock air cleaner, I keep the after market breather on. Seems to draw in more air to the crank case. I use some of those rubber heater hose block offs on the nipple on the air cleaner with a hose clamp. No more changing filters every few months. I have found inline six's don't get rid of crank vapers as good as a V engine. |

I found my filter to be getting dirty quickly from excessive blowby coming out of the crankcase breather via the hose to the pie pan. My engine had over 200k at that point. I would try replacing the stock breather with an aftermarket open-element type. It worked for me.

I've been having the same problem with the air filter on my 64 Valiant. Can you guys recommend a particular brand of open-element breather that would work well with my car? And just out of curiosity, does anyone know why there is a hose connecting the air cleaner to the crankcase? It never really made any sense to me. |

Under certain conditions, crankcase fumes can be expelled through the air inlet, instead of through the PCV valve. If the inlet is connected to the air cleaner, those fumes will be routed to the carburetor & burned, same as if they had gone via the normal PCV route. Your '64 must have a more recent air cleaner, as they didn't use those tubes that long ago. |
