Post subject:  Want to put an 8 3/4 in a 73' Valiant

Hey guys

I have no idea about rearends.......at all. So, forgive me if this sounds idiotic.

I want to put a positraction (8 3/4?) in my 73' Valiant. So, what all is involved in this conversion? Will I have to pull the entire rearend off of a car that has the 8 3/4? Are there any other parts that must be changed along with it? Is there a step by step description somewhere on the net? How can I tell an 8 3/4 from whatever else I might see at a junkyard, etc.

Basically, if someone would be so kind as to list what I need to do, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

An 8 3/4" has no rear cover. From the back it is smooth and spherical. The studs face the front of the car, and the center section slides onto the studs and is held down by the nuts.

IF your lucky enough to find an A body car with an 8 3/4", you would need:

The complete rear including brakes (or at least backing plates, everything else you can get new...)
Shock mounting plates
Bigger U-bolts (3")

If you can't find an A body unit, you have to get one off of any other car (or truck or van ?) and have it shortend and spring perches moved. I believe the B body units are short enough so all you would need to do is move the spring perches to the right spot. Also remember if you shorten the housing you would need to either shorten the axles to match or buy new axles. Check out http://www.moserengineering.com/ they sell axles and can shorten a housing for you.

The e-brake cables from your car should match up, but you might need a different rubber hose to attach to the hardline on the axle.

Last but not least, you need to shorten your driveshaft because the center section of an 8 3/4" is longer then your stock 7 1/4"

Pierre has you covered.
Question, does your 73 have the small or large bolt pattern? (does it have disc brake in the front?) You will need to know this before you go rear end shopping.

Here is some info and pictures of an 8 3/4 being installed.

If you search or email GunPilot, I think he had a "step-by-step" posted on his website. (post the link if you find it)
