Post subject:  Electronic ignition

I have located an electronic ignition system from a slant six. It has the distributor, box, and a voltage regulator. What is the most I should pay for it?? And can I change the plastic gear to a metal one??

Don't forget the ballast.

If its all used equipment, I would say no more then $50-75

I paid $110.00 each for both of my conversion kits, mind you that was brand new and complete with ballast and harness from a dealer in the Chicago area. I considered it a fair price due to the fact they are long discontinued. As far as I know there is no metal gear replacement for the stock nylon, Just keep some spares handy (check the help section in any auto store) Advise you drill out the gear where the rollpin installs all the way through and use a small cotter key instead. Don't ask what happens when the stock pin works it way out! Also you need to remove from the old distributor and install on the new the adjustment/mounting plate. This should keep you busy for awhile....Dave

You can get the ballast and everything else seperately from the local parts store, to tell you the truth. The only real advantage to the kits is the harness, which can be easily made with a bit of effort.

NAPA has a metal distributor gear available. Eichlin number DG 404. Personally I have never used one.

Don't forget, you will need a new coil for electronic ignition. The points type coil will not last long....don't ask me how I know... I also used my single ballast resister. Thats where you want to power to the box from, on the run side (passenger side). I know you can cut one wire if you have a 5 pin box...I think its a green with red trace wire. Two wires to the distributer and the other to the - side of the coil. Bam, 1 hour tops and your done.
