Hey thanks again for keeping the leaning tower of power alive. This website is invaluable and the moderaters and the participants do hell of a job providing info and food for thought. I have a problem and I need some advice. I have an '84 Power Ram with a super six set up and an NP435 4 speed. After about 30 mins. of hard driving, say on the interstate, all of a sudden I blow about a quart of oil out of my oil filler cap and PCV breather. After that the plugs foul as well. When I finally make it home and do some investigating, there is no gap left on my No.1 spark plug and the rest of the gaps are smaller as well. Am I cooking something. What have I done and what do I need to do to fix it. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again. |

If I undertand this correctly, oil collects in your valve cover and blows out the pcv and oil fill. Isn't your oil fill cap a twist on with 2 ears? I don't see how oil could escape there. There is a breather that is connected via a hose to the air cleaner. Oil that goes through there and the PCV valve usually indicates worn valve seals and/or rings. The purpose of the breather is to draw air INTO the crankcase for ventilation. This air is then vented back to the engine via the PCV. In your case is sounds like the crankcase pressure is greater than the atmospheric pressure causing the reverse. I would clean the breather (soak in kerosene) make sure the hoses are not deteriorated/plugged, replace the PCV and inspect its hose. Also inspect the nipple at the base of the carb to insure that it isn't plugged. One other possibility (remote) is that the oil drain back holes in the head are plugged. Maybe this isn't remote as I reread your post and see that you have a 1984 motor (hydraulic lifters). I don't know know how big the oil drain holes are in the head (never owened a later model /6). In any event if they are plugged than oil changing hasn't happened much on this motor. The disappearing gap on your plugs I have not a clue (They are the correct reach plugs I assume). I hope that there isn't 'something' inside the motor that shouldn't be there. |

Yeah oil comes out of the breather and the filler cap. After this happens the engine starts missing. That's a place to start thanks! |

Check to make sure the PCV valve is working and that the line to the carb is not plugged. I sounds to me like the engine is not vented properly. |

I wish it had been just a breathing problem. I cleaned the crankcase breather and replaced the PCV valve which was faulty and still smoked and missed. We ripped the top off of it this evening and pieces of the #1 piston were gone. You could see thru it so I imagine a little oil was passing thru. Fortunately no visible damage was done so I'm going to redo #1 and see what happens. Thanks again for the help. Luke |

Number one had a hole in it? That would explain the oil problem. Any idea how the hole got there? |
