Post subject:  new guy with question about super sixing
Cool forum. Here I go.

My engine: 225 slant 6 1bbl (what does 'bbl' stand for?)

What I want: 225 slant 6 2bbl

Why: Better performance from what I've read

Who am I:
I am someone who doesn't know a great deal about engines, but I'm mechanically savvy, eager to learn, and recently purchased a factory service manual for my 78 D100 truck. I want to do things the right way; however, I'm a bit apprehensive about getting too deep and screwing things up.


Question:
To super six my truck, should I:

1. Get a 2bbl carb with an adapter so it fits my 1bbl manifold

or

2. Get a 2bbl carb and replace my stock manifold with a 2bbl manifold?

To me, the right thing to do would be to match the carb ports with the intake ports and not use an adapter, but remember, I don't want to get in over my head. The adapter is the simpler method, right?

Another consideration is the performance of the engine. Wouldn't using an adapter to fit my stock manifold give poorer performance that if I changed to a two port manifold? I always appreciate getting advice from the voices of reason and experience, not to mention learning from others' mistakes.

that's the first article I read. In fact, it's how I found this forum via a google search. That article is what got me interested in the super six upgrade to begin with.

If it were me, and it is, because I'm doing the exact same thing. :shock:
Buy the complete super six setup. You will not be getting in over your head, due to the fact that a manifold swap is basic. A monkey with a hammer could accomplish this task. In my opinion, just swaping in a two barrel Carb., is pointless. If the added performance is what your after, then do it right, and install the 2-barrel manifold with the 2-barrel carb that it was designed to run with.

Thanks for info. What carb are you using? Did you find your setup in a salvage yard or buy it from someone here?

And what's 'bbl' stand for, since barrel just has one 'b' in it.

Actually, "bbl" IS just shorthand for barrel. Sometime, when they get worked up, the old timers will call them "two bubble" carbs.

I agree. Go for the full upgrade, manifold and all. A super six manifold is a good performance upgrade because there are a large variety opf adapters which allow you to mount a large variety of carbs on the manifold.

AFAIK- "bbl" stands for barrel, even though there is only one 'b' present. Sometimes you may also see '2v'. The 'v' stands for venturi, same animal different naming convention.
[Edit: Looks like Reed beat me to it ;) ]

http://www.prolinefuel.com has adapters and Weber 2 bbl carbs that can be mated directly to your stock 1bbl manifold. Do a search on "weber" and "adapter plate" both here and over at http://www.slantsix.com and you should come across a wealth of information on this setup. From what I have heard seems to work very well.

That being said, swapping on a true supersix setup (2 bbl manifold and carb) is not that involved of a task, as has been stated. The hardest part is re-installing all those blind nuts and triangular washers on the bottom of the manifolds--and perhaps taking the intake and exhaust manifolds apart without breaking the bolts.

Be Bop a Lula,,,, No, it's barrel. Engines with super six are using normally Carter bbd (2bbl) carbs.

I took my factory service manual out to my truck tonight, popped the hood, removed the air cleaner and actually looked at my carburator up close, comparing it to the Holley and Carter carb pictures in my manual for the 225 engine. To my surprise, I'll be damned if it doesn't already have a super six setup and I didn't even know it! It's a Carter BBD-8149S (written on the bar code label on top). I had to wet my finger and rub it across the grime to read the numbers, but that's what I got! Shazzam!

I suppose a rebuild is in order now to celebrate my serendepitous discovery?

Some background info:
The truck was given to me by my grandfather a couple months ago. It had been sitting in his carport on rotted tires for several years, unstarted all those years I suspect. I had to have it towed to a service station, replace the battery, new tires, replace a few hoses and fluids, and the front brakes. I then drove it 250 miles back home. It's in wonderful condition and I'm just now digging into it.
