I'm surprised nobody jumped in here. A shift kit is a valve body change you put in the transmission (made by B&M and others) that changes the hydraulic characteristics to let the trans shift firmer and thus extend the life a little and improve the E.T. performance slightly.

yeah, there are some mods that you can do to the trans. valve body, cheaper than a shift kit, there's some tricks floating around to get firmer shifts... if you do get a shift kit, try for a TCI... I never liked B&M's stuff...

I put a shift kit into a 904 torqueflite once, and what pissed me off is that the shift kit contained a spring, a gasket and a drill bit. The only actual mods you had to to was enlarging a hole in the valve body to ransmission plate/gasket, and fit a heavier spring to a valve in the valvebody(I think the spring had soemthing to do with the governor section, but don't quote me) . The rest of the mods were winding up line pressure a bit and setting bands a bit tighter than factory specs. Also removed a spring from the bottom side of teh accumulator piston.
What I am getting at here is that if you can find someone who has put one in your transmission, you can do all the mods that actually mean anything for nothing at all.
And yes, the shift "kit" makes a nice difference...firmer, quicker shifts and kickdowns when you want them, not after you mash the pedal for a bit. The trans becomes "sportier" if I may use that word for an auto. I also picked up a very slight improvement in economy. This is all based on a 318 engine though.

Regards, Andrew.

There is a difference between a 'shift kit' and a true valve body reprogrammer. Don't waste money on a $25-$50 shift kit, get a $60-$90 reprogrammer.
And don't remove the accumulator spring, does more harm than good.
