| Post subject: | Is the 7.25 posi a good swap for me? |
I have a real good running 7.25 installed on my barracuda /6. I have a chance to buy a 7.25 posi cleaned and ready to install, I believe with 2.92 gears. Is there a great deal of advantage swapping to a posi? My car is a fair weather day (occassional) driver. We have lots of freeway driving where I am from.

For me, the answer to this decision is "How Much $$$" for the 7 1/4 posi? If the seller want $200 or less I'd buy it in a flash, If he wants like $500.00 for the unit, I would pass and look for an 8 3/4, that is a better investment in the long run. Trouble with the 7 1/4 posi units is that parts are almost impossible to find so the unit better be in good working order or else it's a "door stop" DD |

I agree with Doc about the 7 1/4 S.G. That being said, why do you even need a sure grip? A fair weather driver, not a part time race car, I don't see any advantage to the sure grip. If you realy want a heavier duty rear with a sure grip, why not an 8 1/4? |

He wants $125.00. I saw it today, it looked like it was in great shape, but I can only take his word that it is in good working order. Maybe I don't need it...see this is my dilema...well if anyone wants one, I can get a picture for them.

the sure grip is way stronger. old peglegs get real sloppy especially where the spider gears are concerned. BUT i noticed that my valiant seemed a bit slower when i swapped mine out. it seems to take a bit more power to turn the sure grip diff. -james |

For $125.00, if it seems good, I would go for it. This is for a complete rear drum to drum? James is correct about the S.G. rears being stronger. I have been running a 3.91S.G. 7 1/4 rear for years with no problems. Just recently changed to an 8 3/4. Thought I was pushing my luck a little to far with the 7 1/4. Car is 3200 lbs, and getting 1.84 60 foot times.

Sounds like a good deal to me. If you ever want to drive in snow, or take off fast in the rain, the SG is very nice. I hate driving pegleg cars now that I have SGs in my Darts and Van. More control/traction is always good. Nice price too. I bet Randy's can set you up with some clutches that would work for a rebuild too, if needed. They have a limited selection of gears too, at least up to 3.23s. Lou |

I have to agree with Lou about the SG in the rain. It rules. Since putting a 3.55 SG 8 3/4 in my Dart, driving in the rain has never been better. Even if I put the pedal to the floor at a stoplight, the car goes in a straight line (maybe I'm lacking horsepower, huh?). |
