| Post subject: | Starter Compatability Question |
Are all the starters for the slant the same? I think mine is finally going south and I'll need to replace it soon. While at the junk yards, I have seen the short type. Will this work on mine? I currently have the huge hi-mount type and was wondering what years are compatable with a 1968. |

My last trip to the parts store turned up two "stock" units, standard and a hi-torque model, which was the same diameter but about 4" longer. The third option is the mini-starter used on newer models. To get the mini-starter ask for a starter from any magnum V6 or V8 (eg 94 dakota 318) If you have headers this starter will give you tons of clearance. I can actually remove my starter w/o removing my headers now  -S/6 |

Get a mini starter. I got mine from a '95 Dakota V6 for 35 bucks from a wrecking yard. Big difference! They are very durable and well built, even though they are small. |

I'm a stubborn bastard, I like the sound of my old style starter and the whizz it makes when the engine catches. The new Nippondenso starters are japanese and my thoughts fill with import customizers whenever I hear one in an American car. Well, they are reliable, just like most japanese stuff, but I got mine rebuilt by a local shop for about $150 CDN this included new brushes and bearings, redress the commutator and undercut the mica by hand, they also tested the armature on the growler and painted the housing with epoxy. They even tested the assembly on a computerised dyno and included a graph sheet showing the torque curves. Nice! |

Actually the hi-torque model is the one with the shorter armature.....go figure.
