Post subject:  Mounting /6 on stand? How?

I've got the engine on a hoist and I'm trying to mount it to the stand. I can get all four brackets to mount up but I see a problem. The engine cg is above the pivot on the stand. The head is off BTW. If I want to flip it over the weight will be too much and I could have an accident. I have a 1200 pound hoist with four wheels BTW. Can I mount to just three points? The two lowest tranny mounts and one upper? Or should I go with four? I can see that when I remove the oil pan and crank I will want it upside down I think. Does this make sense? Advise please.

I always use 4 mounting points and center the pivot of the stand on the crank. Yes, you must be a bit careful and turn the engine slowly when it is on the stand. Slants are top heavy, even without the head.

If you were deadset on centering the CG at the pivot point youd have to fabricate new brackets or a new pivot head. I wouldn't bother unless you build these regularly. Just use a long bar on the pivot head and go slow.

Toadie, is it a 4 point stand or a 3 point? 4 points are more secure, larger footprint.

Step,

It's a factory 4 point on the engine and a 4 wheeler. Anyway I got it on the stand. Crank is a little below center of pivot. I've got the pin in the pivot for now. I need to remove a few things and then I will flip it over tomorrow. I'll let you know how that goes.

Post subject:  turning the slant over

When in doubt, get a cherry picker over it and bolt a chain with some slack to the engine. Then, turn slowly. If you get into trouble, raise the picker and tighten the chain. I use this method when the engine is fully dressed. I also made sure to start witht he head straight up and let the engine down as far as possible where it bolts to the stand. The only thing better is a custom stand adapter mount like previously mentioned, but haven't seen the need for it.
