Post subject:  8.25 axle question...

I noticed the post down the list about doing Dakota to A body swapping but....
How feasable is it to swap the carrier out of say a Dak 8.25 that has limited slip and 3.55 gears into one of my spare 8.25 A body rear ends?
Do the axle shafts on the A body 8.25 have the same splines as the Dak 8.25 carrier? etc

Thanks

It can be done, but it all depends on how much you want to spend. There is a lot of labor involved. If you've never done it yourself, I would farm it out for the first attempt, but see if you could observe while its being done. As far as the axles go, it depends on the year the Dakota axle is. 96 and newer have a 29 spline axle shaft, whereas 95 and back have a 27 spline axle. Try to get a 95 and back to swap it into the A-body.

Thanks for the input :)
It's a spare rear end so I'm hoping to do this myself and learn while doing. I'd have a machine shop press bearings n'stuff but I wanted to do the tear down and reassembly.
At this time I've only pulled axleshafts out of a rearend to get new wheel bearings pressed on and then reassemble with new seals and gaskets. I'm itching to get into this project more in depth than that.
The car I'm building this for has a good 8.25 but it's an open diff and 2.54 gears '74. (SSSLLLLOOOOOWWWW) off the line.
My spare 8.25 is a 2.76 open diff '73 that I wanna swap in 3.55's and a limited slip.

Thanks
