Post subject:  Dakota rear, what to look for?

I have a lead on an '87 Dakota SG with 355 ratio. The guy asked if I wanted the hex cover or round. He said the round are easier to get. Are these rear ends the same as early Mopars in the 8 1/4 and 8 3/4 varieties? Also if I swap out my 7 1/4 for the 8 3/4 would I have to cut the driveshaft? Also how can I tell if it's a SG? The guy quoted me $350. Are there issues with getting parts should I need to rebuild it in the future?

Thanks

Post subject:  I'd vote for the round cover...

The Round cover should be the 8 1/4" common rear (upto 1994-1996 due to a spline change). The 'hex' rear could be 7 1/4" (some early 4 cyl models could have it), or 'stop sign' cover with 12 bolts in the cover is the 9 1/4" rear (the HD rear, but I'd stick with the 8 1/4" for compatibility sake).
