That depends a LOT on what size car you're gonna put it in. In a lightweight car it might be OK, though I wonder if that hot motor is gonna want a little more RPM. In a C-body land barge, I wouldn't give it half a chance at being able to keep me happy. :)

My opinion is that the 3.23 rear end gear is a bit "tall" for the OD 4-speed.
3.23 x .73 (OD ratio) = 2.36 final drive ratio
3.23 x 3.09 (OD 1st gear ratio) = 9.98 start-off ratio.

Post subject:  tight ratio 833 vs lowwww rear gearset

thanks guys, alittle input helps. doing the math yields appropriate numbers but isnt it a disadvantage to turn ring and pinions really hard? not talking top fuel here. 4.30 gears? vs tight 833? also because the o/d drives high gear thru the countershaft seems weak. will tight gears and countershaft work in the light aluminum case of my 833o/d??>? with large input retainer? :  oops: i feel silly with all this but this engine and vehicle have logged 534,734 miles :D :D and since the engine build about 7,000 and I LOVE IT

With an O/D trans I'd use a 3.55 or 3.91. Randys Ring and Pinion makes a 3.73 set for 8.75's.

Post subject:  Mileage or light to light...

Currently I run a 3.55 with the A-833 OD and I got OK mileage with the combo (actually my mileage stayed the same when I swapped from 2.94's to 3.55's...using the super six setup...3600 lbs car 'loaded')...

If I'd thought more 'ahead' on my Hpak install, I think I'd have opted for 4.11's since the OD ratio time 4.11's make the final ratio 2.99 or 3:1....which is almost like a 3 speed car with 2.94's... but your first 3 gears would be incredible....

If you want to compromise the 3.73 set would be my next choice, more 'fun' than the 3.55's, but you still keep your mileage sane at highway speeds...

Just make sure if you do upgrade, get a sure grip unit to lock it all up on those positive launches...Oh and I drove all last week to work with a 3.55 sure grip and street tires in the snow and never got stuck and never used studs or chains (I love my A-body....sure beat the guy with the Ford Expedition who stayed home all week....)
