Post subject:  Some basic questions of a beginner on slants
Hi guys, thanks for the ideas in my other post, like everyone, I still have questions, so hopefully there is some good advice out there. First off, we are going tractor pulling, and will be using a slant. Should we use an automotive slant or one from maybe a piece of farm equipment etc.? I don't understand the rods situation, can someone please explain the different rods available, and which ones are the best to use?? Is there any heads that flow better than another, if so, what casting number are they??? Heard about steel cranks, did any engine have them stock, if so, what were they used in??? Is there any slant available in the US that is bigger than 225 stock???? Thanks for any advice guys, we get this thing rolling we'll post some pics. :shock:

as far as I know, the industrial slants came with copper coated connecting rods and forged pistons. Look for them in forklifts, commercial boats, generators and welders, all kinds of industrial applications. Might anke a better builder than one out of a car. and generally the earlier the engine the better. I dont remember the serial number break or exact year but I think it's '76 they went to a cast crank rather than a forged one.

Hey Sassy...you should check out the "Articles" section accessible from the home page. Great info that addresses all of your concerns in some detail written by the resident expert, Doctor Dodge. Three articles in particular: 1. Slant Six Blocks...explains which blocks used the Forged crank 2. Slant Six Head and the Revised Combustion Chamber...explains which head to look out for and 3. Stroking the Slant Six...explains techniques used to change the stroke/comp. ratio of the slant. I'm certain these will help. Enjoy.
