 Post subject: sticky shifter

I've got a 75 Dart Sport /6 with OD 4 speed w/Hurst shifter and lately the shifter has started hanging up when trying to find reverse or when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. I can hear a clicking sound under the boot when moving the shifter side to side across neutral, its not very smooth and hangs up when moving between the 1-2 and R position in neutral (trouble is in getting it over far enough to go up into R.) I pulled the boot off to see if there is anything obviously kaput, but didn't have much time and couldn't tell much, except that the lever cluster seemed to be very dry and dusty. The clicking seemed to come from the extension that the actual shift handle bolts into. I thought it could be catching on the thin metal spacers between the levers or maybe there is something worn down near the spring, but it was hard to tell anything with one hand on clutch, one hand on the shifter and a nosefull of carpet. I'm afraid to lubricate it for fear of attracting more dust, and not sure if that is even the problem. Does the linkage go out of adjustment on its own? I'll check the clips that retain the rods....anything else that might be amiss? Is it safe to go crazy with the WD40 to clean things up, or will that invite trouble down the road, so to speak? Any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated. MTSteve
