What does the timing need to be at for a 225? It's at 4degrees now, which i think is too low, as the car has NO get up an go and the HC counts are insane. Any suggestions? |

You don't say what year or type of car it's in... But, it's probably safe to set it to 10 btdc. I can't guarantee that'll fix the HC numbers -- that could be caused by a number of things. |

these are stock settings.. That I just looked up. 67/68 170cid = 5B (Cali cars 5A) 67/68 225cid = 5B (Cali cars TDC) 69 170cid = Automatic 2.5A / Manual 5A 70 198cid = Automatic 2.5B / Munual TDC 71-74 198cid = 2.5B all 69-74 225cid = TDC all My Book covers 67-74  I know my 77 is way differnt, if I remember right it's like 10B or 12B. TDC = Top Dead Center B = Before TDC A = After TDC |

Right. It depends on what cam's in the car & the mixture's a factor... In '77 they were starting to implement more of the emissions stuff: lean out the mixture, add the EGR, etc. When they did this they bumped the base timing to 10 or 12 btdc (depending on the vehicle and year). They probably changed the advance curves too. My '84 truck specs 12 btdc, that's why I suggested 10. You'd have to try setting it there & see if it runs without knocking. If it knocks (pings) then you MUST back it off. Do a search on ignition timing or ignition advance; there's been several discussions on the subject before. |

On my blown /6, I use a vacumn gauge to set the timing. Hook the gauge in the vacumn port on the carb and move the distibutor untill you get maximum vacumn and back it down 2 lbs. My 6 runs the best at this setting. This also works on small blocks regardless of the cam you are running. |

i run 12-15 before depending on the weather at the track that day and have the slots in the distrib welded up so at 14 degrees btdc i have 30 degrees total timing which seems to be about the best. this is a 100,000 mile bone stock 225 in a 74 swinger. i race it every weds night during the summer at our track. (i do miss my big block dart though.........) --chad |
