The IRS nailed me this year (even though I had extra taken out through the year to have a decent refund to start the build of my 225 for my Val)Im gonna just barely brake even if I dont have to pay.
Anyways, im down at the shop yesterday looking over all of my parts and look over in the corner and spy the freshly rebuilt 170 that was removed from the Val, and started wondering if the parts I have already gathered would work with the 170.This is what I have already gatherd for a build;
1 264S Comp Cam and lifter set

2Dutra dual front and modified rear manifold

3Hyper-pac intake and 450 Holley vac. sec. carb

4 FRESH 170 rebuilt with .020 pistons everything else stock.

5MSD6AL and Chryser electronic dist
I realize that this is a 0 deck motor and that cam and headshaving are big issues and that with the 264s I need more compression.I read in an early post that .060 is max that I can cut from the head,is this with the steel gasket or the composite.Also will these parts even work together or will it be a time bomd or dog.I really wanted to build the 225 but money is tight and I need to make use of what I already have.
I have already read all of the posts that say bigger is better but..........anyway any help and advice greatly welcome.

Also the car(60 Valiant) will have a 3.55 rear and 4spd od trans if that helps.It will weigh approx. 3100-3200 with me in it.

if money is tight then your doing fine however I would go more cam/carb and large valves with port work. A reputable shop will beable to tell you how much to cut from yhe head to get the compression you desire. All and all it sounds like a good setup to me though. Remember that a 170 is a high reving motor and will compete with a 225 just fine if you are running an automatic I would sugest a 2400 rpm stall converter and as always 2.5 inch exaust with a good high flow muffler.

Remember that there's not much room for the exhaust through the bellcrank area, but 2-2" pipes will fit fine and be more than adequate for your mill build up. Unless you're worried about mileage, based on pushing a Duster with the A-833OD, you might even try the 3.73's or 3.91's with that box. :wink:

Good luck,

You can make this combo work pretty well but I can't say how much you need to mill-off the head / block, you heed to "mock-up" the engine and measure.
With a little clay and 1 hour's work you will know exactly how much room you have.
