Post subject:  904 hoorsepower question

How much horsepower and torque can my 904, with about 140K miles, handle? I dont know how much I will be able to squeeze out of my slant with the bolt-ons I am going to do, but I am sure not enough to cause failure of tranny. But in the future a total rebuild is in sight, and I am just curious as to what my window of opportunity is for saving for a 5-speed or (most likely) a 4-speed with OD. My slant will be a cruiser but with 3.55's or maybe higher (for quick launches at the strip) I would still like to have enough gears to get to the line quickly, but have an OD for highway driving. 4-speed with OD or Keisler 5-speed with OD, or ..........?

Just want some $.02 from everyone.

thanks.

Oi, considering the mileage that's on the trans and that you're looking to replace it in the future i'd take the route of least investment.
The standard lo-buck/no-buck upgrade would be in order-- remove accumulator spring, drill proper holes in valvebody, crank up the line pressure, new filter with a larger surface area and a flush of the system, add some fresh fluid (whether it be type F or not) and then service the unit as per the FSM-- band adjustment, yada yada yada.

As for the manual box, for your application i'd go with a standard 833OD unit. The 3.09 first will give you all the getup and go you need, and if you're a softshoe the holeshot is there for the taking, just learn to shift real fast! On the big end, the .7X OD will give ya the cruisability you're looking for.

just my .02 worth
