I would like to know the original colors for my newly acquired '74 Scamp. Here are all the codes on the tag. Some were hard to read so I put some options in parens.

N76 R11 V5X L1 510
J25 L31 M21 M(N?)25 H26 M38
V1Y U C15 G15 G52 H(N?)51
HL4 E2Y3 000 219 020 826
E24 D34 VM23 C49(0 OR 8?) 332696

A full breakdown would be useful but interior is what I'm after right now.

Thanks

Fender tags read left to right, bottom to top, so the bottom line is line one:

E24 D34 VM23 C49(0 OR 8?) 332696------
E24= 225
d34= strandard Automatic
V= Valiant
M= Medium Price Class
23= two door hardtop
C= 225
4= 1974 Model Year
9= Assembled in Japan (Don't see that one every day...)
332696= Production Sequence Number

HL4 E2Y3 000 219 020 826------
HL4= Sahara Beige body paint color
E= supposed to indicate price class, but my book doesn't list an "E"
2= Vynil Bench
Y3= Interior color- Gold
000= Upper Door Frame Color (my book doesn't list it)
2= Manufactured in February
19= Manufactured on February 19
020826= Production Sequence Number
V1Y U C15 G15 G52 H(N?)51
V1Y= Roof paint color, or vynil roof code- Full Vynil Roof Gold

My book doesn't decode the rest of it. Sounds like you have an interesting car! How did it get here from Japan?

That really helps. The car was given to me for free from a buddy of a buddy of a buddy kind of deal. I'm at least the forth legal owner as my lasy buddy never had the title signed to him. It has been a Tucson car at least 6 years. Beyond that I have no idea. It does have an EPA sticker under the hood describing emissions equipment although I haven't looked very hard at it. It has the type of gas tank with one vent tube that runs up to a cannister (charcoal maybe) in the engine compartment. Looks mostly stock to me. It has been repainted a beige color. My kid wants to paint it blue. Not too sure about that. I prefer to keep things stock, but it's really his car. The car is in pretty run down condition although the body is surprisingly straight. The #5 cylinder has no compression but I think it's due to a stuck valve as I did get a brief 120 reading but can't repeat it. Which brings up a point.

Should I try to run it and get the valve to un stick or would it be better to pull the valve cover to check it? I hate to throw money at it without knowing what condition the motor is in. I did get it running briefly but due to the old gas and non working gas gauge I pulled the tank for refurb.

Thanks for your help.

I say pull the valve cover, coat it all with some oil, and whack the valve with arubber mallet until it moves. Make sure your pushrod isn't bent either.

Thanks, will do. BTW upon further inspection of the fender tag, it's a B. Not a 9.

Man, the more I look at this car the more I think, this is a real piece of work. Every piece of plastic on the interior is broken. The door panels, dash, rears window panels, everything. The rear floorboard looks like someone ran over a rock as it's pushed up. The drivers floor is rusted through. Oh boy this is gonna be fun. Gotta get it running first. If the body wasn't straight I don't think I would go any further.

Thanks Reed for the help.

Just a thought, might be easier to keep that as a parts car (but drive it around for the time being) and be on the lookout for another a body on the cheap that is in better condition for a resto.

Okay. THe B= Hamtramck Michigan assembly line.

A-bodies in decent shape are becoming scarce. I would hang onto the one you have and keep an eye out for parts on e-bay and mopart and in the local thrifty classifieds.

To continue :
B - Hamtramck, MI plant

E= E price class (started in 1974)
2= Vinyl Bench
Y3= Interior color- Gold
000= Upper Door Frame Colour - Same as body colour
020826= Shipping Order Number, not Production Sequence Number, which is in the VIN

V1Y U C15 G15 G52 H51
V1Y= Roof colour - V1 - Full Vinyl Roof / Y - Colour - Gold
U - Built for the U.S. market
C15 - Special sound insulation
G15 - Tinted windshield
G52 - Left outside remote mirror, chrome, conventional
H51 - Air conditioning with heater/defroster

J25 L31 M21 M(N?)25 H26 M38
J25 - Windshield Wiper - 3-speed
L31 - Fender-mounted turn signal indicators
M21 - Drip rail mouldings
M25 - Body sill mouldings
M26 - Wheel lip mouldings
M38 - ??

N76 R11 V5X L1 510
N76 - Coolant recovery system
R11 - MusicMaster AM radio
V5X - V5 - Moulding, vinyl - body side
X - Colour - Black
L1 - ??
510 - ??

Tag should end with "EN1" or "EN2", with the "1" or "2" denoting the assembly line at Hamtramck.

The suprising thing about this tag is the "M" for price class. A Scamp should be "H". The Scamp Special was "L" and the mid-year Brougham hardtop was "P".
