Post subject:  Blackout grill treatment of '62 Signet

I have just purchased a restored '62 Valiant Signet, white exterior, twotone brown interior. The grill is all bright and shiney like the other models, but on the Signet the grill and headlight doors are supposed to be black. My question is what kind of black paint: gloss, semi-gloss or flat? I don't have a clue, but I DO know it's supposed to be Black. Also, what color is the 225 engine and valve cover supposed to be? Does anyone know where I can get the aircleaner decal: Charger 225? Thanks. :?

You might try Layson's (www.laysons.com) for the decal.

I got a Super Six decal from this guy cheaper than Layson was wanting for theirs.

I know that there is a "correct" paint out there, however, my vote goes to Rustoleum BBQ black. It's super tough, wears exceptionally well and cheap. I **believe** that it's avail. in gloss, semi and flat. If not, they have their "outdoor" paint that's avail. in a variety of finishes and colors.
Go cheap with a rattle bomb and save the coin for brakes or a motor.

I own a 1962 Signet and the paint is flat black.

The engine (225) should be red, as should the valve cover.

And being a Valiant, the decal should be "Super Six", if they used a decal in 1962. The "Charger 225" was a 1953-65 Dodge Dart item.

Thanks. My '64 Valiant had a decal "Super 225", so I guess that is what I need. I believe the Supersix was a much later version with 2 bl carb. Anyone know where I can get a "Super 22" Decal?

You are correct. The "Super 225" was used in the 1960's to denote the car had the optional 225 slant six - the standard engine was the 170. The "Super 225" replaced the "Charger 225" on the Dodge Dart when the B-body Charger car was introduced. My mother owned a 1969 Dart GT with a "Super 225".

The "Super Six" was the 2-bbl version of the slant six offered in the 1970's and early 1980's.
