Someone told me I'd have to look out for an z-bar alignment problem when I put the '77 slant six four speed bellhousing in the earlier Valiant. Mine is a '68, and wasn't sure if he was talking about the '66 and earlier A-bodies, or mine as well. Anyone have some advice from doing this swap before? |

RS, in the "narrow body" 66 and down there is definitely a issues that need to be addressed. At any rate, you should be rocksolid on the fitment, just a slight adjustment with the Z bar may be necessary-- possibly fabbing up a mount plate. I wish that i could give you a more definite answer, but my applications are all V8. At any rate, be sure to gusset that bad boy! -JYH 64 Dart, 2cyls too many... SoCal |

I agree. I know the problem is in the '63-'66 era. I am not absolutely positive of the '67 and later A's, (because if you have a '77 setup, it must be an F-body) but I suspect it will be fine. |

Z-Bar should be fine, use original 60's piece, make sure plastic bushing inserts are in good shape. Bellhousing must match year of '77 tranny, due to pilot shaft retainer bearing, shifter on '77 is different mounting style ( rubber mounted to reduce vibration, not hot setup for banging gears ) shift lever may have to be heated & rebent to suit location of drivers seat. Install new pilot bearing in crank, $ 5.00 now is real cheap insurance for later ! Be aware, 1st to 2nd shift is one heck of a drop in rpm's ! Early 4 speeds behind slant 6's had revised gear sets ( opposed to V-8 trannys ) matched to the slant 6 rpm range. Better to find a V-8 4 speed, use adapter pilot retainer bearing ( allows small diameter pilot retainer in '77 bellhousing ) w / late model bellhousing, much better gear ratio spacing than late model O/D unit |
