| Post subject: | Posi for 8.25 Rear - Different Types? |
Going to put an 8.25 in my 68 Cuda someday. Trying to gather all of the parts. I've seen two different types of posi units for the Chrysler rear. One, I think is the Auburn type, has two plates and four springs in the middle. The other is the Dana, doesn't have the plates and springs(at least not visible in a photo). I was wondering if anyone had any experiences, opinions, info, etc. as to which unit would be the best for a road car, not a drag use car. My car is a /6 used for curvy mountainous country roads, and will most likely never get romped off of the line(at least not by me). Thanks for all of the wonderful information. |

Either type of Sure Grip, in good condition, should work fine for you. In hard use, the Auburn type (cone) can wear-out and stop working as a limited slip unit. If the Dana type is avalable, use that one. (clutch type) DD |

About a year ago, I had my 8 1/4 ratio changed from 3.21 to 3.91 and had Auburn posi put in at same time. The posi makes itself known so seldom (slick surface or really tight parking lot turn) that I keep wondering what that noise is. Dunno if it is good, bad or indifferent because I have never had posi, SG, LSD, etc., before so I have no comparison. I would suspect that any unit with a sliding friction surface like cones or clutches will eventually wear out. Like a manual transmission's clutch, it prolly has more to do with the driver than any other factor. |
