I have a chart that lists A-body 7.25" rear as 53.2" from flange to flange, and the 8.25" at only 51.4". Are the brakes that much wider so that the overall width is the same? I'm a little concerned, my wheels and tires are already about and inch from the springs and if I loose another 3/4" on each side they will be too close for comfort.
Any one have any insight on theis question?

The rear axles of all A-bodies have the same overall width. The backing plate measurement is confusing because of the differant size brakes that were offered over the years.

Thanks! that was what I was hoping to hear. I'm really excited to go from a 7 1/4" w/ 2.76's to an 8 1/4" w/ 3.23's and a suregrip.
