| Post subject: | Turning Signal |
I've got a 1970 Dodge Dart Custom According to my Hayne's manual, if the turning signal is out is has to do with one of the following things: (A) Blown Fuse (B) BLown Bulb (c) bad connection The SIgnal works on and off, but it slowly got worse over time so I can guess that it's what these people say: According to people I"ve asked, there should be a little round thing in the dashboard 'somewhere' that controls the signals... the problem is I have no idea where 'somewhere' is. I looked and found a square thing, with three prongs sticking out, and a plug that had three prong holes but they were the wrong angle so it didn't match up. Now, I don't have a heater or the controls for one, so I guess maybe this thing is for the heater that I don't have... Thoughts? Thanks in advance for the help. |

Gee, that's a surprise... the haynes book didnt mention the flasher? The flasher lives in a round hook attached to the steering column support beam, close to the lower dash support. If you have no idea what a flasher looks like, go to the parts store and buy one first. I recommend the HD-12 flasher. It's an expensive electronic one, which lasts much longer than the cheesy bimetallic strip one. Your flasher should only have two blades coming out of it, arranged in an L shape. I just did this on my '69 Dart Custom, and I used a solid state electronic flasher I salvaged from a Greyhound bus. They retail for about $150. Probably overkill |

Oh, by "expensive" I mean $10 versus two or three. |

On a 1970 Dart the flasher should be up under the dash next to the glove compartment thats where it is on my 70 Valiant |

Most will 'tick' when flashing, if it still works enough to do that.... turn on the turn signal, and find where the sound is coming from. -Gregor |

The flasher near the steering column is for the emergency lights, the flasher for the signals is just to the right of the radio, left of the glove box. Curl your fingers under the dash and feel around, you'll find it. A cylindrical cannister, maybe about an inch tall and an inch and a half in diameter ? It is on the bottom most fold of metal on the dash so you shouldn't have to do any extreme reaching. If you hear the ticking from the flasher, then it is not the problem. Even if you don't hear ticking from the flasher, it isn't necessarily the problem. First off, is the speed slow/nonexistant when signaling left, or right, or both? Or does the signal stay on solid without flashing? There are 3 bulbs in parallel on each side of the car. The turn signal indicator in the grill, the indicator in the dash, and one fillament of the tail light bulb. Of course, these are replicated for the opposite side of the car. If one of these bulbs is either burnt out, or has a poor connection, the flasher will fail to flash, or will flash at an abnormal rate. So check all the bulbs, sockets, and associated connections. Often you will find the inside of the socket will have some corrosion in it causing a faulty connection. Sand it down a bit, and also make sure the socket has a good solid ground on the housing or frame. If, when signaling, none of the lights at all illuminate (and conseqently no ticking), I would suspect the switch in the steering column or associated connection. The harness connecter of the steering column switch tend to get finiky every now and then. I just recently went through this issue. When signaling left all was dandy, when signaling right all the indicator lights stayed on solid. The right tail light socket wasn't getting a good ground on the housing. It was passing enough current to turn the lights on, but, not enough current to heat up the metal strip in the flasher to allow it to produce the flashing effect. Also check the fuse box I can't be positive but I think there is a fuse for the flasher. May of been only for the emergency flasher not the signal one, can't be positive. |

Here's where the flasher is located on my '74 Dart Sport. You can see that it is mounted on the right side of the frame holding the ashtray, just up from the bottom edge of the dash. The plastic housing has a square tab on the bottom which pushes into a hole in the frame and is held in place with a 90 deg. twist. Let us know where you find yours, Jerry |

1975 and 1976 A-body cars have the flashers both located to the left of the steering column, below the instrument cluster, right from the headlight switch. They fasten the same as the one shown above. If yours do not have the square plastic peg, then the flasher fits into a metal clip which in turn snaps into the same hole that square peg goes. A replacement flasher will NOT have the square peg. I've found the metal clip in other Mopar vehicles but I forget which ones. |
