Hi, I am new to the board. I recently bought a tired slant 6 race car and I intend to run it when the Mopars come to Mokan (a local drag strip) next month. I think I am going to need a little help getting the car ready and I thought I might need to ask some of you for information from time to time. Although I run on the strip some, I am not up to date on Mopars and I am really out of my league on slant sixes. I am a retired shop teacher and now days I drive a school bus route mornings and evenings and I work on street rods during the day at my shop. I am planning to take some time to go over the car the next few weeks and then run it at test and tune a couple of times before the Mopar meet. Right now I just want to get the most out of what I have and I want it to be safe. I am going to do something about the looks later.

The car is a 63 2 door Dodge Dart. It has the 225 engine, headers, Holley 4 barrel, MSD ignition. electric fuel pump and regulator, 904 transmisssion with a reverse valve body and some extra clutches(I really know nothing about what is inside the trans). It has a 410 posi trac rear, slapper traction bars and has a fuel cell in the trunk. The information I have on the car was given to me by the original builder/owner but it was built several years ago and has seen some hard use. I am having the tranny rebuilt later this week.

I need to rebuild the brakes and check out the front end while the transmission is being built. Are there any particular weak spots or other things that I should look for on this car?

It is always good to hear from another SL6 racer. :D

It sounds like you have a good car to work with, do you know what type of rear end is in it, is it an 8 3/4 "drop-out"?

Seeing you are going to do some transmission work, you may want to invest in a nice 8 inch torque converter. Putting the later 904 low first gear set (2.76 ratio) into the box could be a good move.

Just tune it up and put down some passes to see how it runs, then go from there.

I would like to know more about the 8 inch torque convertor. Are you referring to a stock part or and aftermarket one. What is the stall speed? The builder told me the trans has a 995 sprag and 5 clutches. The previous owner messed up something in the trans. It works good in reverse and the fluid is not burnt but it slips in the forward gears and more so as it gets warmed up.

The rearend is not the stock one. I need to look it over some. It does not have the drop out center section. I would like to buy some small slicks but I need to figure out how tight to turn the engine so that I can see how tall the tires can be. I think I can only fit 8 inch wide ones under the car.

I would post a picture but I have not figured out how to do that yet on this board.

I have lots of thoughts and questions. I will stop for now.

The stock torque converter is a 10.5 inch, they stall around 2500-2700 if you have a "high stall" version.

A smaller converter (8 or 9 inch) is a custom converter, the one I have stalls around 3800 and it is pretty efficiant, here is what it looks like:

Thanks for the information on the convertor. Where do you buy this brand and how much are they? I have read about some for the 727 trans but I have not located any for the 904.

Since the engine I am using is not fresh(probably a little weak) I am wondering if the stock stall might be enough for now. If I have to buy one I would buy a higher stall but since I think the one currently in the car is okay, I might just keep it.

:D Hey Doc! Being a drag racer S/G&S/ST(I don't race my /6 car's"yet") i gotta say i am impressed with your converter selection. I have known Cris at continental for 20 years and even before he became the owner he made the best converters money can buy! I had one in my challenger from the mid 80's to last year with a brake!! As you know being a racer, that is unreal!!Juat wanted to tell ya Doc, I am impressed and you got my vote Man! Good luck in Vegas.............Bill

Yes, Cris at Continental does make a darn good converter. :D

Soooo Bill, any chance we can get you out to Vegas with one of your Slant cars? We pay $$$ to any new racer who runs. :shock:

Same WZ JUNK. I am secretly getting ready for the HAMB drags.(Not to secret I guess) I am also planning to run at the Mopars at Mokan meet next month. It is a race car of the HAMB style and I have posted a picture of it on the recent post about cars that are being built for the drags.
