Well I'm home on leave for a while before heading to Spokane, and I think later this Summer or close to Fall, I'm gonna buy my own Dart. It's a '72, no body on the front end (it's the fixer-upper that I asked about in an earlier thread), engine and tranny in good repair, possibly a bent frame rail, but I'm told there is a good shop in Spokane that can fix it, so I'm not worried about that. We've talked about 700 for it, which I think isn't bad, considering it's still restorable. More than a grand and I'd be wary. Any thoughts from you guys?

BTW, I'm back

$700 for a car with no front end and a bent frame rail scares me, but then I'm just that way.

From your area it should be completely rust free though, right?

Sadly no, it's in Illinois, which means I've gotta get a week of leave before I can actually go get it :?

Where at in Illinois? If it's close to me (Chicago) I can go look at it for you. Illinois car has a 92% chance of being rotten though.

That depends on where in Illinois. 92% sounds like a far southern IL car. Around Chicagoland, the road salt capital of the world, its more like 99% And thats on a car thats about 5 years old. On one 32 years old, don't even ask.

for $700 I want a car that runs and drives.MY experiance tells me that if a car has been sitting,it can be a bag-o-snakes..Just ask me as my 4th wheel cylinder began to leak...after replacing the other 3 as they began to leak !!!No Fun !!. I wouldnt mess w framerails that need help ,either. On a muscle car worth great value it's not as big of a deal...Plenty of good framed slants still available..They made litterally millions!!!!

I just sold a nice '63 Dart from Socal, and in very good running condition for $1000. 99% rust free and no mechanical problems. Buyer drove it 200 miles home.

I hopped into it after 2 years of sitting in NJ and drove it to NC with only one flat tire and a new set of wiper blades.

We tried to sell it in NJ for as low as $600 and had no takers after 3 months. Hard to understand...

There's my story...

Lou

I took a 'backroad' to another member's house and stopped by a rural house with a 1974 Gold Duster with a for sale sign in the window....

Straight body, driver's door dent and scrape mark, interior intact, slight tear in driver's seat, green, white rallye stripe, white canopy top, slant six, A904 Auto, green bench seat interior with non-space duster rear seat, A/C, under dash hood realease......$700 or best offer.....depending on how things go and if I can find a place for it, I may go back and offer $500 cash...then part down my 1974 road smoker....

the bargains you can find in 'odd' places....

Correction, I was wrong. I had thought it was Illinois, but it's in Indiana. 'Bout an hour north of Indianapolis.

Still a rust risk?

Hrmm... that's more than I've paid for all but 2 of my cars... I'd be giving that one some serious reconsideration. It isn't as hard to find a decent old Mopar in Washington as you might think. Heck, I picked up my running FeatherDuster for half of that.

Interesting. Any suggestions on where I can look in eastern WA?

Off the top of my head, I know that DusterIdiot had a Duster he was thinking about selling... it's one that I went and looked at for him. Pretty solid car for the price. I'd check wiht him first off.

Aside from that one, what are you looking for? There are some cages I can rattle....

I paid $650 for my '64 Dart GT. It was sitting for 10+ years. The original owner died and I got it from his wife. I talked to her about it (it wasn't for sale) and she called me back 2 years later. It is original 4 speed with a DESTROYED interior and some rust in the quarters. It started up after I poured oil in the plug holes just to be sure (I let it sit overnight).
I think you could get a running complete /6 Dart/Duster in any state in the Union for $500-$1000.

Well I'm pretty sure I want a Dart. Preferably a Dart Swinger if I can get my hands on one. My goal is to have a good performing street rod, but still be able to use it as a daily driver on days when I wouldn't have to take my truck out.
