Post subject:  choke stove for 69 BBD

Hey guys,

Im just about ready to throw my original slant back in the Dart; I bought a '79 Volare 2bbl intake to go in it and Ive decided to delete the EGR and use a 318 BBD from Napa for a 1969 car. I have no idea though, how to select the proper choke stove for the combination, since it never existed.

Also, is there anything I should be aware of regarding removal of the EGR valve? I'm certain just putting on a blockoff plate isn't enough. Am I right?

Blocking off the EGR port is more then enough. I used a chunk of 3/8" aluminum plate and hi-temp permatex.

Do you have the exhaust manifold from the 79 Volare? If you dont I would recomend a manual choke. this is how I have mine connected up.

Thanks "K",

70V, yes I purchased the manifolds and carb as an assembly but the choke stove was missing. I would like to use an early 318 non emissions BBD and swap the throttle plates from my late Super 6 BBD. The problem is matching a choke stove to the manifolds as the early BBD was never used on the Slant. So why use the early BBD?

I want to use a simpler version of the carb than the 79 one I received. Without the emissions porting and extra mechanisms I figure there will be less tuning necessary and the carb will be less likely to lean out the mixture due to clogging or sticking. I also dont want to add a canister or vacuum hose to my 69 car.

There is another solution. Go with a BBD off of a 76-77-78 3/4 ton truck as in those days, anything over a 6000GVW was considered "heavy duty" as far as emissions went which meant that emissions gear was virtually non existent. Both 78 trucks that I had, were 318's and had EGR blockoffs--STOCK, and no canister. Also consider, I have removed/disconnected the canister on many vehicles and as long as you cap off the vacuum at the carb base it will work fine. The 78 BBD would go on there and hook up to your 79 Volare stock choke stove no problem!

So your looking for one of these?

If you are looking for the lever and thermo spring part, NAPA carries them. The problem is that they made a LOT of different ones, so you need to bring in the carb tag number as that is how their (paper, not computer) parts catalog differentiates them.

this is the exact point I was trying to describe in my opening message. NO pre-emission BBDs were used on the slant. Therefore, the carb number on the carburetor I want to use, will be of no use in matching a choke stove.

70V, yes that is what Im looking for, a choke stove. But as Pete mentioned, many different ones are available and they do not interchange. Spring rates and rod lengths vary among carburetors.

By the way, does anyone know anything about marine carburetors and their choke stoves? Were the marine slants available with a BBD and would that carb help me, or do they not have an accelerator pump?
