I know this is in the wrong section, but I figure it will get more exposure here. My current speedometer and odometer are not working well. I am trying to keep the visual appearance of stock (or at least performance parts from the era my car was made) on the inside and outside (except engine). The speedometer jumps around a lot (I am thinking cable where it connects at tranny is not so hot) and I can here ticketing that coinicides with engine speed coming from the tranny area while driving. the ticking also goes in time with the jumping of the odometer, which one day "ticked real bad" and never worked since. When my wires shorted in the back of the dash, it was arcing off the numbers on the odometer so It was burning and jumping and doing all sorts of crap.

So i guess my question is this: What to do.?

get new cable? but what about the gauges? They arent offered new are they? send them in to get fixed? check ebay? check junkyards?

I recently bought a full set of guages for my '76 off of ebay. they were in very good condition, good price too, I think I got them for $25 or $30

Before you spend your hard earned cash - The jumpy needle on the
speedo may just be the cable binding in the sheath. Trace back the
sheath from the back of the dash to the trans, looking for sharp
bends or kinks in the cable - reroute to make bends as flowing and
as large a radius as possible. Also carefully disconnect the cable at
the back of the speedo and slide the inner cable out - keep it clean
and lube it with white grease and slide it back in. Give a twist until
it seats again at the trans end and put it back on the speedo.
If you have been living right this could cure the jumpy needle.

I've got a similar problem with my truck, except the odometer seems to be working fine. The speedometer works up to about 57 mph, then goes bonkers. I have completely disassembled and cleaned the cluster. In doing so, I could get a direct view of the speed/odometer components. Nothing seemed irregular.

If you ever notice your Speedo bouncing, your need to lube is ASAP... if your quick you likly wont have to replace the cable. I noticed mine starting to do it. I got right on it and the bounce was gone just that quick. I have noticed the differnt views of things to lube it with. What I used was White Grease, with a bit of heavy oil mixed in. Things i wouldnt use, Strait Graphite, and Bearing Grease(Will not react well with cold weather)

i wish my fix were that simple. My odometer "fell" backwards away from face of dash and came into contact with one of my wires that had a hole in the insulation, so the wire was arcing onto the odometer numbers and it burned most of them off, I am going to replace cable and dash and gear in tranny since most of it is shot anyway.

thanks for all the good info though, I appreciate it. ALso I just went flat broke this month so I most likely wont have too many "fix it questions that require purchases of any kind" lol oh well. so it goes.
