Post subject:  Help me decide which pickup

I currently drive a 2001 Ford F150 XLT Supercab with the 4.6L Triton V8. I've been very satisfied with this truck. It has plenty of power for my needs, since I don't tow anything heavy or work out of my truck in a harsh environment. Basically, it's a daily driver. It's comfortable for the few trips a year I make down to Houston, and it has plenty of room to carry passengers comfortably. Fuel mileage is reasonable, not great.

Here's the thing...
The payments are killing me. I am starting to think about getting rid of this truck and look for an older Dodge. My problem is I don't know anything about them. I don't know what the models are called, how they came equipped, what year models are good or bad, etc. I need a little guidance.

I must have an extended cab body style. I need some decent fuel mileage (seen gas prices lately?) I want enough power to get out in traffic and not fool around, but not so much that I can pull trees down. I don't like shifting gears all the time, so my preference is an automatic. I do like the convenience of power windows and locks and cruise control. I definitely want one that I can begin doing my own mechanic work, I can't stand having to take my Ford in to the shop when a plug coil needs to be replaced for $140. Yes, each of the plugs has its own coil.

So, what do you suggest? In which year models were the Dodge trucks still easy to maintain by us shade-trees? What style would have the convenience items I mentioned? Would the slant six be suitable, or should I look for a 318 or 360? What rear end and transmission?

So many questions, but I know you guys won't lead me astray. I'm not in any big hurry, but I want to know what I should be looking for, in case one comes available.

Thanks for any input,
Jerry

Post subject:  Your question

Your first mistake is driving a 4.sick(6), that engine has been nothing but problems for ford. If you are looking for enough ass when you hit the gas, and you do ocasional pulling, you would be best suited I think with a 318. I hate to say this b/c I own a dodge truck with a slant six that can take 5.slows(0) all day. But without modifications, and just for dependibility, and reliability you cant beat the 318. I own a 98 dodge 1500 4x4 and have put 265,000 miles on it and have had no problems. It is still all stock and I get about 18miles to the gallon. And there is no lack of power (360), But If you go even older, I have owned a 1980 dodge ram 2wheel drive that had a 318 in it which also was very reliable and had plenty of power. I guess what I am saying is no matter which way you go, a Ram is the way to get there. I hope this may help you somewhat, and good luck getting rid of that payment.
