I'm having absolutely no luck hooking up a ammeter to my 81 dodge pickup with a 225 slant in it. Anyone know the basics to hook up the ammeter? |

If we're talking a modular ammeter gauge, there will be two terminals on the back of the gauge. Wire one directly to the battery. Wire the other to the ammeter output terminal, and run any loads from that terminal. This way, if the alternator stops charging, current will run from the battery through the gauge to the loads, moving the needle to the left. When the alternator is charging the battery, current will move from the alternator to the loads and any remaining current will go through the gauge to the battery, moving the needle to the right. Once the ammeter is connected, verify the needle is moving in the proper direction and if it isn't, reverse the polarity of the gauge. I cant remember off the top of my head which terminal is which. Make sure your charging system is working before trusting the gauge. |
