This question more applies to my truck, but it'll let me fix the same problem in my fiance's Dart as well (if it doesn't get junked). Anyway the story is this: the interior blower motor in my truck is toasted. I replaced the brushes a while back on it, but it only partially helped. The output was still anemic, and it made a God awful "WHIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" noise whenever it was on. The problem is that even a new fan motor for my model truck gives relatively weak output, especially compared to the one in my dad's new Jeep (ugh and I hate the thing, too). My question for those of you who know your stuff with electric components, is if there's a way to get rid of that annoying noise, and if there's some way to get some more oomph out of an electric motor than what it's originally built for (without upping the voltage). I'd love to have a bit more air flowing in my truck, and especially to have the fricken thing be QUIET!

When I was messing with my radio a while back I, by accident, unhooked the blowermotor. When I was bussy hooking ik back up, I first got the same vibrating noisy low power blower, then I tried something else and there I had full power again, without the noise! I just can't remember what exactly happened, but I think I fixed it by putting 12v. straight to the blower motor?
Just so you know that it probably can be fixed by messing with the wires, sorting out a short or maybe bad grounding.

I haven't ripped into one of those motors, but maybe its just a bearing that needs some lube? That may help with the noise but I doubt it would have to do anything with how much air it moves.

Just remember though, the more air you move (faster rpm) the more noise you will create assuming the same fan mechanism.

Try kragen, I recall them showing listings for blower motors.

The commutator might be dirty/bad. When you replaced the brushes, did you look at it. Usually I'll take light sand paper to the commutator while spinning the motor with a drill or such, then clean it thoroughly.

Yeah, I did that. I may have taken off too much copper, but when I did it on another motor, it completely failed. I think you're pointing at the right cause though, because it's definately the noise of the brushes against the commutator.

I am almost certain it's the shaft bushings making this noise. It is possible to have the motor rebushed, but you will probably have an easier time just finding a replacement motor. Aftermarket motors should have plenty of power; i dont see how it could be an issue... What kind of truck do you have?

It's a Toyota Land Cruiser, FJ62 model. Toyotas and Mopars are my favorite vehicles :P

I'm gonna try the sandpaper trick and see if that'll at least alleviate the noise. It's got brand new brushes in it from when I installed 'em last spring, but it IS where the noise is coming from, so I'm assuming I nicked the copper contact area or something. If I can't completely get rid of the noise I'll just buy a new motor after I get to my base.
