I just bought a 72 Scamp with the 225 and I assume a 904. My problem is that the car hangs on to each gear until it gets to a pretty high rpm (2500 or so?) then really bangs into the next gear. It does not matter if I am really getting on the accelerator or slowly accelerating, it still holds on then shifts hard. Also, with every other car I own including my 72 Cougar, when I am cruising at a low speed, then let off the gas, the car shifts into the next gear. The Plymouth does not do that, it just hangs on. Like I said, I just bought the car and I have not yet changed the trans fluid and filter. However, I have been reading the forum for the last few days and there seems to be a lot of talk about adjusting some rod or lever attached to the trans to adjust shifting? Sorry to seem so ignorant, this is my first Mopar project.
BTW, I have a receipt that shows that the tranny was rebuilt about 15K ago (at 90K). Thanks in advance for any help.

Almost sounds like your tranny kickdown lever is wired all the way back. Does it upshift when you slow down instead of just coasting?

The kickdown linkage connects at the carb throttle, and through a series of rods pushes a lever on the tranny back as the throttle is opened. It should be adjusted such that when the throttle is wide open, the lever on the tranny should be nearly all the way back (leave 1/8-1/4" slack in the trans lever)

If the kickdown linkage is there, there should be an adjustment near the carb end, or possibly the trans end. If it is adjusted correctly, the trans has other problems.

If the linkage checks out, then the valve it operates inside the trans is sticking.
Super6 is right; somebody probably wired the lever in position.

Thanks for the info, you gave me some stuff to check. I always thought that the kickdown linkage was only for when you stomped on the gas, then it would kick you down a gear, i didn't think that it had anything to do with regular shifting. As far as coasting goes, if I take my foot off of the gas and let the car slow down, the car will down shift a gear. However, it feels like downshifting with a stick-shift. It downshifts at a pretty high rpm and the engine compression really slows the car down. Like I said before, every other automatic that I have owned will just coast to an eventual stop without the downshifting if you let off of the gas. When it downshifts, it almost feels like I move the column gear selector from "Drive" to "2", then from "2" to "1".

F**ds only use the KD for WOT and a vacuum modulator for the rest, but it's everything on a Mopar. Shift points (up and down), line pressure, the works.
If your linkage is stuck in one position, the trans thinks it's accelerating even if it's not, so when it gets to a kickdown speed while slowing, it downshifts like you say.

Maybe someone put a shift kit in it, or even used type F trans fluid in it.

I was thinking maybe it was a shift kit by the way it shifted, but I just can't see someone going through all that work on what is an otherwise bone stock 225 Scamp. I know that the guy I bought it from just put a brand new carb on the car. You say that the kickdown linkage is connected to the carb linkage, so that seems to me to be a good place for me to start. You may see my back here asking some more questions though !!
