| Post subject: | dash removal - '60 valiant |
I'm trying to remove the dash of my '60 Valiant to replace burned-out dash lights. I've dropped the steering column, but haven't been able to pull the dash out at all. I know sometimes the speedo cable keeps it from coming out and that it needs to be disconnected. But how do I remove the headlight/wiper switches? I can't tell how they're attached from behind and there's barely any room for a hand in that cramped space, with almost no good position to get a good look. Advice please! Thanks. |

You don't need to remove the entire dashboard to replace the lights, just the instrument cluster. |

| Post subject: | Light and wiper knob release |
The light switch body (up behind the dash) has a kind of push button. The button is almost dead center of the switch (yes right in between all the wires !) You pull the light knob out as far as it will go then continue with light pressure on it while pushing the button, the knob should pull the rest of the way out. The wiper switch has a very small slot near the base of the knob, placing a small (jeweler's type) screw driver in the slot should release the knob from the switch shaft. These are the instructions for a 61 Valiant - I am fairly sure the light knob removal is the same - but the wiper knob may be different for 60 or for variable speed wipers. |

The best way to deal with the headlamp switch's pushbutton is to tape a penny to your index finger and use the penny to push the button. Disconnect the battery negative cable first! Before you do this, check the forward edge of your headlamp switch knob -- on my '62, both the headlamp and wiper knobs can be removed from their shafts by inserting a small jeweler's flat screwdriver into an axial slot just before the knob ends and pushing inward -- this releases a spring clip and the knob can be pulled off the shaft, enabling removal of the instrument cluster faceplate. This clever system was discontinued for '63, though. |
