Water spots and sludge would be consistent with a motor with high miles. It is a by product of blow-by and cold weather. I really wouldn't worry about it.

I found some water spots and tan sludge on my dip stick. It does run a little weird and has 140,000 miles on it. The previous owners have kind of neglected the exhaust and fuel system. Runs a little rough when cold and at idle. I have done about all i can from carbs to tune up. It is a 86 Dodge d100. Even though it is my beater truck i do enjoy driving it. Gary |

It just started doing it, noticably after I changed the carb. I do have blow by. The temps are actually warming up, but has kindy been rainy this past week. I figured I would drive it until it won't go anymore. I wish Dodge still made a truck like that today. Gary |

Someone once told me that if you run 4 quarts of oil + 1 ATF through the engine for a few miles it will clean up any sludge. May be worth a shot. Try using thicker oil or something like Lucas Engine Oil treatment to help with the blowby. It may let the slant live a bit longer. |

My brother said something about ATF. I guess they use for many things in the military from bounce control in heavy equipment to cleaning engines. I may try some engine additive. Gary |

Make sure the PCV system is functioning properly, and not plugged up. Check the passage in the carb, and also make sure the carb to manifold gasket is installed correctly. There is a small (1/4 inch) hole in the gasket, it must match the corresponding hole in the base of the carb. |

Cast Iron SL6 engines have a good stable head gasket surface and stock engines don't have many head gasket issues. One "clue" or test to the head gasket seal and condition is to pull-off the valve cover and retorque the head bolts, if they are loose and take a lot of additional torque, you could have a cracked head or failed gasket. I used the Trans fluid in the oil trick in my old Slant, and it worked pretty good just don't leave it in too long. There is a great deal more detergent in the ATF than your oil. We used Dex II, I don't know if Type F would work the same. Good luck. |

One thing to watchout for when 'desludging' you mill is that once you run the ATF (I've had guys use diesel, but they drive f#rds...), it might wipe out all the gunk that's built up in the crevasses/nooks and crannies in your engine and while it may be 'clean in there', you may find that you'll sprout some new leaks in new places you'll have to regasket the thing again. Also if it washes some nasty stuff out that's too big to fit through the oil pan bolt hole you'll have some mystery chunks swirling around in there and possibly 'stuck' to the oil pickup screen. 'Vroom' is a good sounds 'Boom' is not. -D.Idiot |
