Are aluminum spools acceptable for drag racing? or are they only for circle track etc... ? The same question for the mini-spools?

Yes, drag racing is OK with an aluminum spool but not with a stock sized axle. Mark Williams has an alum 8.75 spool but must be used with his 35 spline axles which are larger than the stock 30 spline. Strange 35 spline axles will not work as the splines do not match. Price is about twice the steel spool.

I have been seeing some aluminum spools for sale ( some of which were 30 spline units) and I didn't know if they would be Ok for drag racing or if they would be too weak.

I wouldn't use them even with an aftermarket 30 spline axle. I don't think it would have enough splined load area. The ones for the Ford 9" aluminum spool use 40 spline for even more load area.
Steel will be more durable but aluminum in the right application will give good service in lower HP cars or higher HP cars without a clutch or transbrake. They've been used in 10 second stockers with autos.
Normally light weight parts add up to a lot of $ and gives small gains in performance to show for it.

Rick, Summit used to list a steel spool for 30 spline axles for $179. Much cheaper than an aluminum spool and 35 spline axles.

You are correct, an aluminum spool is fine for drag racing, but not really worth the extra $$$.

You would probably see a bigger gain from the MP aluminum housing. It will take off some weight, especially from your wallet.
