| Post subject: | Manual Steering Box Rebuild Parts? |
Is it possible to find parts to rebuild a manual steering box? Mine is nothing special, just a factory manual box in a \6 68 a-body. The lower output seal is toast and I am sure everything else is due for a refresher as well. Anyone ever do this? It doesn't look all that difficult except for the special tools needed to pull the bearings, seals and the thrust arm. Your comments are welcomed! |

A few years ago, there was a 20:1 kit was available from Mopar, maybe they have the 16:1 and 24:1 also. I needed to rebuild the box on my '70 SuperBee. Before I got to it, I found 2 manual boxes that were used on Drivers Ed simulators. They never had a load on them and are as tight as a NOS box. I used one on the '70 Bee and put the other on my '68 V200, now I need to redo the box on my '66 V100, so please give an update on how you make out. I bought a '82 D150 last year that had manual steering. The owner had rebuilt/replaced a lot of parts on it. I have found everything he said he did to be true, except the box that was supposed to be rebuilt has a lot of slop in it. I don't recall who he said redid it, but in 15,000 miles, it is quite worn. If Firm Feel rebuilds your box for you, check to see they give a warranty. Cecil |
