Someone not too long back had some questions about differences in speedometers fo their A-body...

I was cleaning out the garage and snapped some pics for comparison of the 1974 to 1976 instrument clusters...

Top speedo is a 1975 100 mph cluster out of a Valiant, note the EGR light and the mandatory 'unleaded gas' sticker for the catalytic convertor. Bottom one is a 1974 120mph cluster out of a Dart.

Image

Backside of both clusters, showing the circuit boards are the same up to 1975 (same part number), and the only difference is the EGR light socket...

Image

My 1976 unit is currently in my car, but here I'll throw in a spare '76 circuit board in the center of the pic...

Image

A close up shows the '76 has two extra prongs for a set of lights in the speedo area, some slight changes in circuit routing...the cluster body is the same as the '75 unit.

Image

So if you're grabbing that spare cluster, you should be ok as long as you have the correct circuit board for your year 73-75 or 76... would like to see someone follow up with say a comparo of 1968-1972.....(rallye, non rallye?)

FYI,

-D.Idiot

DI,
Are you saying that the cluster from the '76 Duster I recently acquired would not be interchangeable with my '74 Sport? What does it look like the two extra light connections are for?

Jerry

You'll have to swap circuit boards to make that work...of course if you want to do a trade, I'll send you my '74 (120 mph)speedo and you can just send me the one out of your '76...???

-D.Idiot

If you do strip it, I also might want the two 'special' wire harness parts for spares...

DI,
I'll make note of your offer to swap. My son Aaron and I need to discuss what to do with the Duster parts we don't need right now for his Sport. My guess is he will want to try selling whatever he can to offset the cost of his project. He's only 14, and extra cash is hard to come by, not having a job. On the other hand, these cars are not that plentiful around here, so any spare parts to keep stashed would be good, too.

Decisions, decisions...

I'll let you know,
Jerry

i got my spare cluster out of a post 73 dart, im not sure what year. i always thought that speedo only went up to 100 because it was a four door. i figured if u had a 4 door, you had a family and didnt need to be going over 100 anyway. i guess i was wrong. :D its interesting to know why it really had a 100 mph speedo.

Also note that 1976 cluster uses a shunt type ammeter. See the copper foil traces on the circuit board to the ammeter?

Earlier years use a direct connected ammeter that has heavy gauge wires connected to the ammeter studs on the back of the ammeter and no copper foil traces on the circuit board for the ammetet.

The 1976 shunt type ammeter is NOT interchangeable with other year ammeters.

I don't think four doors are the only ones that have no need to go over 100mph. That said I have a four door and am trying to make it somewhat racey, but I'm strange and like four doors.
